MIFFF’d All Day Spectacle

This marks the end of our bi-centennial ceremony. Over to the press release:

Manchester is a gnostic city, it’s people and culture, tied most assuredly, to the spectacular notion, that they are workers participating in a great and benign plan. And yet…those lovely, endangered and oh so crucial bees, are also prisoners of fate… Drones. This idea is promoted with suspicious enthusiasm by many… from the town planners, to the millionaire bar owners looking for an easy piece of advertising, to the hip banks, perennial villains of the modern age. Archons, in control the symbolic identity of a people. Strong currency for an age when identity is the first and last hill, upon which many are prepared to die.

In the spirit of the Cathars, the Zoroastrians, the Albigensians, the Communards, the Unions, the men and women that died in The Peterloo Massacre, the Punks, the Queers and indeed, Old Scratch itself, The Peer Hat offers an antidote. Our City, is its people: is fluid, is majestic, is ugly, is terrifying. During the three weeks of International Festivities, we offer the opportunity to lift the stone from the soil and expose the beautiful, crawling monstrosity, that is Underground Manchester.

The dead, whose memory remains un-fulfilled , are invited to attend…let us show why our disobedience… is our greatest strength

CONFIRMED ACTS

CELESTIAL NORTH:
Celestial North is a solo artist/ guitarist/ multi-instrumentalist hailing from Scotland but currently found drifting around the mountains and forests of the Lake District. Victoria Wood has pursued an interesting path through music, from Scotland, to Manchester, to Scotland and back again. Backed up by British Sea Power’s drummer, Matt ‘Woody’ Wood on drums, her music is a stunning detour into a land of impossibility, terror and beauty.

CHELSEA HARE
Tom Hollingworth, has been a fantastically singular talent for many years. His latest long player, ‘The Prayer & Profanity Of Howard Coward’ is a tremendously articulate meditation on grief; mixing the irreverent and the poetic, the funny and the furious with great aplomb. Disarming, uncanny moments of theatricality sit comfortably alongside more downbeat moments of introspection. Tom’s incredibly funny and poetic lyrics provide a tremendous thread through the blizzard of fairly schizophrenic musical styles, incorporating jazz, electronica and ambient. Tom’s voice is unmistakably his own. A spectacular artist, deserving of a wider audience.

YOSSARIANS
Mancunian legends with a range of different band members over the years, Yossarians returned with their 2018 EP ‘Ambition Will Eat Itself’. Offering a richness, depth and intensity that it’d take many of their contemporaries a whole career to achieve, they’re going to grace us with their first performance at The Peer Hat (and indeed, their first Manchester appearance in some time). Undisputably unmissable.

JOE LEVI
Joe Levi is a gifted singer-songwriter originally from the rural Yorkshire but now living and playing in LA. Having formed The Jungfraus with Mick Kenyon, he departed the band to pursue his own twisted version of the American Dream. With a new album about to be released, we’re very pleased to welcome him back to Manchester to perfrom his brand of witchy folk, baroque pop, soaring balladry and far-out psychedelia.

Bio-electrical resistance project developed by members of Bristol noise-beat outfit Big Joan following an unsettling encounter with a rogue archaeologist. Project leaders Adam and Keith will be joined on this occasion by North Manchester’s very own bard of dissent, Michael O’Neill (Tesla Tapes / FuckPunk). “If Druidism went electric, it would sound like Flag Fen” – Bristol In Stereo.

ALDOUS RH
Real name Alex Hewitt, the former Egyptian Hip Hop leader and precocious talent rarely sits still. Signing to Polydor subsidiary R&S Records still in their teens, Hewitt’s former band grew too left-field for the major label to keep up. Since disbanding, Hewitt assumed his new identity and quietly released his debut solo record in 2012 only to quickly disappear off to play with everyone from the likes of Charlotte Gainsbourg to Hudson Mohawke. Pursuing a rich vein of electric rubber soul, Aldous’ latest project is a hyper mystery and one that he’ll be sharing with us in July.

THE JUNGFRAUS
The Jungfraus have already staked a claim to cult status, having crafted two lo-fi psych albums, crammed with audacious and varied music. Having gone from a five to a four piece, Mick Kenyon leads them into a new era of bubble-gum pop psych, waging war with strange sad ballads and an elusive trickster’s vibration. With a new album about to arrive, there’s no better time to start paying attention to The Jungfraus.

SATAN MANSONS
Politburo front man, Nick Alexander formed Saturn Mansions in 2018, during a hiatus from his usual activity. Joining with prodigiously talented Mexican singer/songwriter/guitarist, Helea Gimeno, Death To The Strange bass player Paul ‘Swervediver’ Sewell and Norweigan sound doctor and drummer ‘Red’ Eirik Dyroy, the band have swiftly formed a reputation for innovative and surprising live shows, attempting to merge two worlds into one (as it is).

ERICKA SANCE
Los Angeles musician, dancer and artist, Ericka Sance, comes to Manchester for the first time to reveal her staggering body of psychedelic sonic excursion. Hard to pigeon hole, Ericka pursues her own, singular vision, without compromise, leaving audiences to appreciate her exquisite voice and daring compositions.

JENNIFER REID
An expert in the folk dance and voice traditions of Lancashire, Jennifer will be punctuating our MIFFF’d spectacle with Peterloo era folk song which recall the appalling atrocity visited upon the people of Manchester.
