Breadth ‘N’ Depth #1

May 2, 2020 @ 10:00 pm - May 3, 2020 @ 2:00 am

Ever wondered what tunes your favourite selectors haven’t really had a chance to play out live? Breadth ‘N’ Depth aims to address this. This night offers a glimpse into the broad tastes and deep musical knowledge lying behind some of the best established and up-and-coming DJs in the North. Expect a ridiculously eclectic mix of music that showcases genres from across the globe.
This is a charity event: proceeds will be donated to support the work done by the fantastic Support for Student Sex Workers, an organisation that protects all sex workers by offering 1-1 and group support sessions, CV checks and careers / academic advice, support with rape allegations on campus and creative opportunities.
HARDCORE SOY:
The brainchild of Manchester-based selectors Hardcore Harry and DJ SOYBOi – nostalgic hardcore meets HARD HARD HARD. Building on their mind-destroying contributions to live sets for Grl and Babycakes, as well as Furious Styles’ Rinse FM shows (https://soundcloud.com/rinsefm/furiousstyles161019) and Soyboi’s CLUB60 show on 1020 Radio (https://www.mixcloud.com/1020Radio/club60-w-soyboi-19th-february-2020/), this duo promise a set of pummelling, ridiculously high-tempo gabber and breakcore that threatens to break the sound barrier.
MYNA:
A Northern-based selector whose sets for Babycakes and GRL have showcased her love for Afrobeat, Gqom and baile funk, MYNA’s first experiences behind the decks were b2b’s playing metal, rock, ska and punk to name a few. She’s looking forward to playing a mixture of punk, emo throwbacks, and music by female-led alternative bands.
POISON IVY:
A member of B L O O M and Anti-Pattern, as well as 1/2 of Heavy Hitters Alliance, Poison Ivy has steadily established herself as a highly eclectic selector who’s as comfortable exploring high-tempo techno, trance and DnB slammers as she is with down-tempo, EBM-informed chuggers. For this set, Poison Ivy’s planning on pulling out some of the more guitar-driven, darkwave tunes at her disposal – expect moody, reverb-laden tunes that’ll make you feel like you’re on the set of The Hunger (1983).
CHERI LEE:
An upcoming Manchester-based DJ who’s well-versed in Afrobeat and the dancer side of electronica, Cheri Lee presents an exploration of Mandopop for her set. Having grown up listening to countless Mandarin Pop CDs on long car journeys, Cheri nows a thing or two about what makes a good Mandopop tune. Varying from heartfelt, karaoke-eqsque crooning to slightly bizarre remixes of Kelis’ ‘Milkshake’, she hopes to bring a set that will make being dragged to spend hours in Chinese CD shops as a kid worth it.
