DESCRIPTION:Magic Castles are an American alternative psych-rock band from Minneapolis\, MN. The group is well-versed in the ways of blissfully floating psychedelically-inclined folk-rock. Gentle harmonies float above twanging guitar and farfisa organ.Their songs have an optimistic and light tone\, but the guitars often jangle and crash with the best of them. There’s a little for psych heads of all tastes\, and a lot to like for anyone who appreciates softer psych intonations with a distinct pop sheen. \nFormation & History \nMagic Castles was created by Jason Edmonds in 2007\, who immediately set to self-releasing three albums in their first two years. After fans uploaded tracks onto YouTube in 2010\, the music caught the attention of Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre\, who heard the Magic Castles’ song Ballad of the Golden Bird and signed the band to his indie imprint\, “A” Recordings Ltd. In 2012\, Anton’s imprint released a compilation of the first three self-released albums as a self titled 2LP Magic Castles. They also supported BJM on a successful east coast US tour in 2012. Magic Castles toured the west coast and southwest successfully in 2013\, building up a loyal following. In the spring of 2014 The Brian Jonestown Massacre released a Record Store Day split single with Magic Castles\, who contributed two songs on the B side\, adding to the bands mystique. In fall of 2014 they released the album Sky Sounds\, and again toured the west coast & southwest of the US\, playing several festivals. In 2015 the band released their third album on A Records\, Starflower\, toured Europe and UK successfully\, bookended by appearances in front of large audiences at Reverence Valada festival in Portugal and Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia. In 2016 songwriter Jason Edmonds decided to take a hiatus to attend to his family\, and now\, in 2020 we see Edmonds’ return with the band\, releasing a new album “Sun Reign”\, their fourth on A Recordings. \nPress \n“There are bands who seem to channel their best qualities through the atmosphere\, who make production sound like their blood vessels\, and the Magic Castles are one of those bands. DESCRIPTION:CANNONBALL STATMAN are an interdimensional rock band from New York City. Their frontperson has been described by LiveTrigger Magazine as “the king of modern anti-folk”\, and the band has often been noted for their unique sound and stage presence\, described by German Shepherd Records as “pure genius”. Their soulful\, articulate songs often tell stories in nonlinear\, surreal ways\, with intricate\, poignant instrumentation\n\nJD MEATYARD came to prominence as front man of post-punk outfit Calvin Party (formerly Levellers 5). A firm favourite of the late John Peel\, who described them as ‘the greatest undiscovered band’\, they recorded eight Peel Sessions\, charted in the all-important Festive 50\, and released a number of well-received albums including ‘Lies\, Lies and Government’ and ‘Sex and Other Life Tragedies’. Recent years have seen Jd continue to release records on Probe Plus. His anti-folk songs winning him airplay on Gideon Coe and admirers such as Half Man Half Biscuit with whom he regularly tours. Of Jd’s latest album\, 2018’s ‘The Batchain Pullers’\, Louder Than War opined ‘If there was still a Peel Festive 50 it would be in the Top Ten this year.’\n\nVICE VERA is the solo project of Manchester-based musician Tamsin Middleton. Using loop pedals\, haunting vocal melodies are layered with off-kilter guitars and percussive textures to create an insistent\, joyous and confrontational sonic landscape. Sounds like solitude\, memory\, nostalgia\, a rainy walk amongst trees… \n\nAngeline made her television debut on ‘Later…with Jools Holland’ in October 2022\, and there’s a major interview with her in The Guardian. In July 2022\, Angeline was announced as the fourth winner of the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize at Cambridge Folk Festival\, which generously supports the development of emerging talent in the folk genre. \n\nYou can also hear Angeline as part of alt-folk duo We Are Muffy with Nick Duffy (of The Lilac Time)\, and psych-folk duo Rowan : Morrison with The Rowan Amber Mill. \n\nThe Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (released October 2022\, Topic Records) is a work of re-storying. The historic Black presence in the UK dates back to at least Roman times\, yet is often hidden\, forgotten or unacknowledged. The populations of enslaved African people and their descendants in the USA have their bodies of folk song\, which are vitally important for containing histories\, expressing feelings\, giving voice and claiming presence… but the Black ancestors of the UK have no equivalent body of song. The Sorrow Songs begins to address this. It is a gift to the forgotten Black ancestors of these islands\, and to the folk community here today. The album uses history and imagination to tell stories of UK Black ancestors in the sonic style of UK traditional and folk music.

They were quickly snapped up and signed by Swedish label PNKSLM Recordings\, having only played one gig — at Trans Pride Brighton. Since then\, the prolific band has built up a die-hard following and churned out four critically-acclaimed DIY records in two years. Their three 6-song EPs and debut full-length album\, all of which were recorded in their living room\, have garnered praise from the likes of KEXP\, Stereogum\, DIY Mag and The Line of Best Fit\, with the LP “Calf of the Sacred Cow” appearing in the top 25 of the “best albums of the year” lists of Swedish music magazines Gaffa and Hymn in 2018.\nThe band cites their biggest influences as the Pixies\, Blondie\, Oh Sees\, Black Lips and sixties psych and garage punk\, but holding everything together is Mia Lust’s ear for melody and no shortage of hooks. Served on a bed of fuzzy guitars and polychromatic pop\, the lyrics center around alienation\, love\, the human condition\, the impending apocalypse and\, occasionally\, on Lust’s place in the world as a transgender woman.\n2019 saw Chemtrails play a live session for KEXP as part of their International Clash Day celebration in London\, after which the band focussed on recording album number two. “The Peculiar Smell of the Inevitable”\, to be released in May 2020 on PNKSLM Recordings\, will be the band’s heaviest and wildest record yet\, with their trademark big melodies and harmonies performed over a frenzied wall of raw guitar noise and glistening synths.\nAfter their bandmates went their separate ways to pursue other projects Lust and Orlova relocated to Manchester from London in late 2019. They’ve now recruited a whole new lineup\, bringing a fresh burst of excitement and ideas to the band.\n\nTHE MANIFESTATION GROUP are a new music based spiritual science project\, revolving around the exhumation of various thought forms and ‘ghosts’ in the form of resonance and music. SUMMARY:Tupenny Bunters w. Indian Pale Male
DESCRIPTION:Dave and Fi Dulake became TUPPENNY BUNTERS in 2012\, the same year they got married. Fi had been the Hammond player in Dave’s previous band\, The Virgo Intacta\, who were on The White Stripes “Satan” tour as 1st support. Parallel to running a notorious Southend music pub\, The Railway Hotel\, the duo\, after naming themselves after Regency prostitutes\, set about capturing the sound they perceived\, a piano dripping garage/pop wall of melodies and chord shifts. Their first album was recorded live to a Studer in the cellar of the pub. They released it on their own label\, Dansettual. Called “A Tuppenny Upright”\, the results\, while sketchy\, present them well. At times\, the piano (a Bluthner upright) threatens to cuddle you to death\, at others it appears to be absently flipping you off\, and the drums are tuned high\, dirty and loonar. If they were cleverer\, or could be bothered\, they’d be prog. Cooler\, or if they both dressed like Fi\, they’d be psyche\, and if they didn’t constantly feel the need to burst into song\, for their sheer sonic nerve they’d be garage.\nThe Bunters songwriting is all the way down the cracks between Pete Ham\, Syd Barrett and Lionel Bart\, but their live performance sits precariously on a web spun by X Ray Spex\, The White Stripes\, Wings and\, well\, Sparks\, I guess – in that\, you’re never quite sure who to watch. She smashes shit out of the kit with her hair going everywhere\, while he\, 20 years older and desperate to keep up\, pounds the Fender Rhodes and screams his fucking head off\, trying always for a snarling Steve Marriott but coming off more like an enraged Dean Friedman. Then they swap\, and now you’re totally on the back foot\, cos now he’s laying into the kit\, and she’s up…her intense brown eyes staring you down; melodies from an age way before her time and a piercing\, shrieking voice that only ever seems at home above top C. Fingernails scraping down a Marmite smeared blackboard. You won’t go to the bar though\, cos then there are the songs\, which\, possibly against your better judgement\, will tick one of your boxes. They’ll take you on an uncomfortable switchback ride through pop music’s wheat and chaff\, and just when you think you’ve dissed it or nailed it\, when you think “I can hear a bit of 10CC and The Damned in there…” then Billy Childish pops in with Julie Andrews and you still won’t know whether they’re tossers or visionarys. A review for Dave’s “Butterfingers” album in The Face back in 2003 called it “annoying and refreshing in equal parts”\n\nINDIAN PALE MALE is former Frazer King genius\, Nathan McIlroy’s latest project. Following a period of self imposed exile\, Nathan has returned–and Manchester is better for it. Now armed with a single piano\, IPM is a unique\, funny\, sometimes tortured\, sometimes jazzy excursion which\, if McIlroy chooses\, will only go on to garner further acclaim. Check it out.

The apocalypse— all of them—are not swift. And whatever form the ‘doom of the world’ takes\, it has it roots in the severance of connection…with the land and with time itself. However\, this is no death cult! Thus we present ‘Becoming The Transmission: Re-enchanting The Apocalypse’ as this years battle cry. We cannot be destroyed… instead we transform\, becoming an emanation that pulses into new arrangements\, even as the horror swirls around us. This field is ours to be. \nThis year we present magic\, discussion\, music (of course—and what music) film and theatre\, all compressed into the basement men call The Black Stage\, the very bowels of The Peer Hat! And of course\, we look to you\, the visionary seekers of Manchester and further abroad. Over the years Sharron Kraus’ musical career has pulled her in many directions and seen her collaborate with artists\, poets\, writers and researchers\, creating soundtracks\, podcasts\, musical accompaniments and responses. She is an intuitive improviser\, a compelling performer and a weaver of musical spells.\nThe spine supporting this body of work is songwriting\, though\, and it is to this most natural combination of words and music that she always returns. If prose writing is a tool for analysis and working out what we think\, because of the emotional dimension music introduces\, songwriting is a tool for working out how we feel. \nK I N \, her newest album\, is a collection of songs written during and partly in response to the pandemic and the relative isolation it plunged us into. Kraus dives into deep explorations of themes of kinship with other humans as well as the natural world\, and of what happens when those kinship bonds are severed or abused. Sonically the album is on a continuum with her previous solo album\, Joy’s Reflection is Sorrow\, with its layered synths and recorders\, and sits somewhere in the space between Jane Weaver’s electronica and the psych/folk of bands like The Left Outsides\, Modern Studies. \nFINALLY and with great pride\, we will be performing a late show of Paul A Green’s play THE MAGUS OF KLOOK’S KLEEK (Recently published by Scarlet Imprint in a collection entitled BABLON & OTHER PLAYS) . Paul Green grew up in London and studied at Oxford and the University of British Columbia. Magickal techniques are central to his writing practice\, which is ultimately an exploratory process. Thus his pursuit of the arcana of magic and the enigmas of esoterica is exemplified not only in Babalon and Other Plays but in poetry\, as in his collection The Gestaltbunker (Shearsman 2012) and in such novels as The Qliphoth (Libros Libertad 2007) and Beneath the Pleasure Zones (Mandrake of Oxford 2014). \nHe has made radio documentaries on aspects of the occult and paranormal featuring Colin Wilson\, Francis X. King\, and Iain Sinclair\, among others; while the plays have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3\, CBC Canada\, RTE Ireland and Resonance FM and have been staged by Travesty Theatre and New Theatre Works. He has performed or presented at many venues\, most recently at the Final Academy\, Magickal Arte Bristol\, the Moot with No Name\, the Electric Palace Hastings and St Augustine’s Tower in Hackney. He has especially enjoyed collaborations whether with musicians like the late Vincent Crane or with the artist Jeremy Welsh\, creating video poems like The Slow Learning and Radial City. DESCRIPTION:Described by Time Out New York as an “art-rock visionary”\, Charles A. Looker has been active in underground music circles for the past two decades as a composer\, vocalist\, guitarist and keyboardist. His music brings together diverse influences and styles including classical composition\, metal\, pop\, industrial\, and improvised music. Born and based in New York City\, he has received commissions from various ensembles\, however most of his output has been with his own bands.\n\nLooker was a founding member of the now-world-renowned experimental collective ZS\, establishing his roots in the ’00s Brooklyn DIY scene. He left ZS in 2007 to form his own band Extra Life which recorded three albums and several EPs\, toured the US and Europe extensively and built a devout international following before disbanding in 2012. Since then\, Looker’s main performing vehicle has been metal/electronic project Psalm Zero. Other ongoing projects include Seaven Teares\, a mostly acoustic quartet featuring medieval instruments\, and Period\, an improvisational trio with drummer Mike Pride and electronic musician Chuck Bettis.\n\nIn 2018\, Looker released the first record under his own name\, Simple Answers\, a song cycle for three singers\, a 17-piece chamber orchestra\, and electronics\, on his own limited edition vinyl imprint Last Things Records. This concept album\, dealing with fascist psychology\, stand-up comedy\, and addiction\, was performed in its entirety by the full ensemble at National Sawdust (Brooklyn)\, and was praised by the New York Times\, Pitchfork\, and NPR.\n\n​In 2022\, Looker revived Extra Life and released Secular Works\, Vol. 2\, a sequel to the debut record from 14 years prior. With a new line-up including Toby Driver (of Kayo Dot)\, and Gil Chevigné (of Helium Horse Fly)\, Extra Life began touring the U.S. and Europe. And now to The Peer Hat. Honoured!
