DESCRIPTION:A punchy double header\, with the support of Manchester’s marvellous Ghost Station.\n\nDanish four-piece KINDSIGHT make music that draws from 80’s and 90’s alternative rock and\ncombines it with the shimmering Scandinavian pop that the region has become so renowned\nfor\, resulting in a sound that is both fuzzy and melodic in equal measure. Releasing their first\nmaterial in 2020\, the up and coming Danish four-piece have been quick on the rise\, picking\nup steam with a series of new singles over the last 18 months the band is set to release their\ndebut album ‘Swedish Punk’ on March 25.\nKindsight formed when front-woman Nina Hyldgaard Rasmussen and guitarist Søren\nSvensson bonded over a shared love of The Sugarcubes. They went on to recruit bass\nplayer Anders Prip and drummer Johannes Jacobsen and over the past few years have\nearned a reputation within Copenhagen’s thriving indie scene for their exciting live shows.\nOn the album’s title\, Rasmussen says “Swedish Punk’ was an off the cuff term our producer\,\nAdam\, came up with when we needed a working title for a new song we wrote during the\nrecording sessions. Our bass player\, Anders\, then wrote some lyrics based on the working\ntitle and we ended up liking the whole ‘Swedish Punk’-thing so much it became the name of\nthe album”.\nThere’s a real coming of age charm to Swedish Punk. ‘Don’t You Grow Up’ was the first\nsong the band ever wrote together. Written in “a time when we thought to be a sunny\nteenage rock band\, you had to write songs about teenagers in the sun\,” they say. Atop\njangling guitars\, Rasmussen’s distinctive voice dances somewhere between that of Mazzy\nStar’s Hope Sandoval and Alvvays’ Molly Rankin\, leaving the listener drenched in the\nnostalgic optimism of summers gone by. Lead single ‘Sun Is Always In My Eyes’\, an\nunrelenting indie-pop earworm\, continues in that same vein. Recalling a time when life was\ncarefree\, the band say the track is about ‘stealing money from your mother and feigning to run\naway from home. Being blessed and unable to see because you’ve got too much sun in your\neyes’.\nThere’s not a single song on Swedish Punk that would feel out of place on the soundtrack of\na 00’s independent movie. The band possess an unmistakable talent for crafting disarmingly\nbuoyant yet achingly nostalgic indie-rock songs based on the everyday. ‘Queen Of\nCowboys’ is an ode to the free-form chaos of interacting with the general public.\nReferencing the matter of fact\, yet often completely insane advice and ideas you overhear\nfrom strangers passing by.\nPunchy cut ‘Hi Life’ tells the story of being trapped in an apartment (imagine!) for months on\nend\, watching life unfold through the windows of the block opposite. Rasmussen’s vocal\ncontinues to shine\, playfully weaving its way over the band’s almost math-rock backing\nbefore finally meeting the guitars for a truly addictive chorus.\nSwedish Punk is a truly addictive debut\, steeped in optimism\, wit and melody. A treasure\ntrove of charming and infectiously catchy indie songs\, sprinkled with a good measure of\ndissonance and noise. The album is set for release on March 25th\, 2022 via\nStockholm-based independent label Rama Lama Records (Melby\, Wy\, Steve Buscemi’s\nDreamy Eyes\, Chez Ali etc.).\nSLOW DOWN MOLASSES is a Canadian indie rock band from Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan. The current five piece lineup consists of Tyson McShane\, Aaron Scholz\, Levi Soulodre\, Chris Morin and Jordan Kurtz. The band’s sound and roster has changed dramatically over the course of its history; having evolved\, in the words of Exclaim! “from a sprawling art-pop collective (at one point including 14 members) into a more muscular\, shoegaze-y\, post-punk outfit.”\nSlow Down Molasses have released four full-length records since their inception in 2006.[4] 2011’s self-released Walk Into the Sea included collaborations with musicians Julie Doiron and Olenka Krakus. DESCRIPTION:Following on from September’s first preview of Unmasked\, we’re back at The Peer Hat on Wednesday 13th April for the final performance ahead of Ushiku submitting his DYCP activity report to Arts Council England.\nIn Unmasked Ushiku Crisafulli uses hip hop\, comedy\, soundscapes and theatrical monologues to explore autistic authenticity and autistic enjoyment.\nIt will also feature an exhibition of masks created in partnership with Filipino artist Miel Timtiman that challenges infantilising language around autistic enjoyment and autistic authenticity while also offering a global south perspective on the importance of creating art from recycled materials and environmentalism that were created using a micro bursary from Graeae as part of the Beyond Programme..\nThere will also be art commissioned from Accrington based Jonny Lindsey and Nigerian artist Akilo Joseph.\nFollowing on from the initial sharing Ushiku made a conscious decision to include an array of incredible supporting artists whose own experiences include those of dyslexia\, dyspraxia\, mental health and neurodiversity.\nTom Juniper is an autistic and genderqueer poet based in Sheffield\, UK. They have been shouting rhymes at microphones for almost two decades.Tom writes poems about identity\, oppression\, politics and monsters. They enjoy playing with poetic form\, nicking ideas from folklore and making everything a bit gay if at all possible. They don’t have any merch to promote at the present time but a pint after the show is always appreciated if you want to show your support.\nSketch is a rapper\, producer and poet based in Manchester\, England. Since signing with madness records Sketch became 1/5th of ‘The Commission’\, the labels own gangster racket posing as a hip hop collective.\nKate Ireland is an artist\, writer and performer hailing from Glasgow currently living in London. Her work explores capitalism\, empathy\, mental health and the mundane.\nAnthony Briscoe is a performance poet and socially engaged artist from Blackpool\, currently living in Manchester. His poetry ranges from socio-political commentary\, space\, advertisements replacing love and even clown funerals. DESCRIPTION:For the fourth time in five years\, the Manchester Folk Horror Festival returns to The Peer Hat. Currently sporting a largely music and live performance based event\, this time\, the focus is squarely returned to ‘Re-enchantment’\, older\, wiser\, more focused. \nThis aim is to begin and end a ritual performance that encompasses the entirety of the day\, linking the performers in a grand movement\, seeing different voices coalesce and dissolve\, a celebration of Imbolc\, and a call to the spirits of The Peer Hat and Manchester. \nUltimately\, we are coming together to tell a story. And that story\, we will remember and we will draw from it…and it will spiral out and away…and the whatever it touches\, will create more stories in it’s stead. \nThat’s the plan. \nA dream to some\, a nightmare to others. \nTHE FATES A Folk Horror mainstay\, and vitally important to both our times and the grand scheme of the day. The Fates are led by Manchester punk icon Una Baines\, releasing Furia in 1985 and then disappearing into the annals of UK punk purgatory. With all the DIY traits and snarling attitudes of Manchester’s smart-arsed punk retaliation\, the band delivered a record of haunting\, mechanical folk and pastoral drones. This virtually unknown LP\, with a backstory that unites sleeve artist Linder Sterling (Ludus)\, Tony Friel\, Martin Bramah\, and John Cooper Clarke with the 16th century Pendle witches\, is a vital missing piece in Manchester’s self-help anti-pop industry. Lost in the ether\, lauded by collectors\, and likened by Mark E. Smith to the Third Ear Band\, this unclassifiable arty-fact renders tags like “pagan punk” utterly inadequate. File under-ground. \nZIM ZUM Salford’s sonic sorceress approaches the Black Stage with a brand new organically seeded box of tricks. Consistently compelling. \nCHELSEA HARE Another of our mainstays\, always unpredictable\, mercurial and brilliantly gifted. This is music from a un self consciously liminal space that invites comparisons from Nick Drake\, to Throbbing Gristle. \nME LOST ME is the solo electronic music project of Newcastle based artist\, composer and musician Jayne Dent\, current Artist in Residence at internationally renowned concert venue Sage Gateshead. Described by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant peculiar noise”\, Me Lost Me delights in experimenting with genre\, taking influence from folk\, electronica\, art pop\, ambient and noise music to create a beguiling mix of soaring vocals\, synth\, field recordings and hypnotic rhythms. Her live shows are atmospheric\, dark and playful\, with a repertoire that explores storytelling through original songs\, improvisations and reworkings of traditional ballads.\nFollowing the release of her debut album ‘Arcana’ in 2018 she has been touring the UK extensively\, with notable performances including BBC Radio 3’s ‘Exposure’ at Fruit in Hull\, Manchester Folk Horror Festival\, Northern Electric Festival\, and recently supported Maximo Park at the Virgin Money Unity Arena. Me Lost Me was named in NE Volume’s ‘Top 10 Artists to See Live in 2021’\, after gaining attention for her experimental and adaptable approach to livestreams and online works during 2020.\nHer highly anticipated second album ‘The Good Noise’\, released in November 2020 and supported by Tallbird Records and an enthusiastic crowdfunding campaign\, demonstrates a maturing of her sound and a deepening of her exploration of landscape\, sonic texture\, storytelling and her experiments with genre. \nNATHALIE STERN\nOf Swedish origin and now living in Newcastle upon Tyne\, Nathalie first served her apprenticeship in Swedish pop punk band Candysuck\, which influenced the emerging Swedish feminist music movement in the mid-90s\, before moving to the UK and founding the guitar/drums duo Lake Me in 2001. As a solo act\, and keen to explore traditional Swedish folk heritage and more experimental sounds\, she released her debut album ‘Firetales’ in 2009 on her own label Minta Rec and on the German label The Company With The Golden Arm.\nHer long awaited follow-up\, ‘Nerves and Skin’\, was released in 2019 and builds on the experimental folk traditions of her debut\, awash with vocal harmonies\, synth loops and drones but with the maturity of an artist who knows their craft and is at the top of their game. Using a sparse set up of loop pedals\, vocal effects and synths\, Nathalie sculpts haunting soundscapes that fuse a love of old folk songs\, horror and folk lore with vocals and lo-fi electro textures. The album was released on Inverted Grim Mill Recordings and Cruel Nature Records on CD\, limited white vinyl and limited cassette tape (sold out).\nNathalie is often joined on stage by Lindsay Duncanson and Marek Gabrysch from the experimental performance collective Noize Choir\, and whose vocal effects augment the tracks on ‘Nerves and Skin’\, ranging from industrial noise to melting glaciers.\nHaving toured extensively throughout the UK\, Europe and North America\, Nathalie has supported luminaries like Silver Apples\, tune-yards\, Daniel Higgs\, Damo Suzuki and was invited to perform an improv gig in Austin\, Texas\, with Thor Harris from Swans.\nShe performed at BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking Festival in 2017\, and is featured in ‘Folk Horror Revival Volume II – Sweet Fruits’ (Wyrd Harvest Press\, 2018)\, a book series with content contributions by today’s folk horror practitioners including literature\, poetry and artwork. Nathalie also runs the regular radio show\, HÄX\, on CAMP Radio. \nBRONA MCVITTIE Pioneering her own brand of cosmic folk\, Bróna McVittie both deftly reimagines traditional folk and crafts her own nature-inspired songs with a rich mix of acoustic and electronic instruments. Her debut solo album We Are the Wildlife\, released in January 2018\, earned her a string of four star reviews from MOJO\, Uncut\, The Guardian and The Independent garnering high praise from critics including Nigel Williamson and the late Andy Gill. \nThe album’s single Under the Pines was featured in Lauren Laverne’s best-of-2018 list. And before her Womad appearance in 2019 Bróna was interviewed live by Cerys Matthews on her BBC 6 Music festival highlights show (it was then that Cerys described her music as ‘cosmic folk’). \nHer second album The Man in the Mountain\, released in September 2020\, immediately scored the much-coveted Folk Album of the Month spot in The Guardian. Later that year Jude Rogers ranked it 4th in her 10 Best Folk Albums of 2020. In her words “You’re put in the place of a bird navigating wide open landscapes\, absorbing light\, space and air. This is music that takes you on its wing\, and gives you fresh visions”. \nThe Man in the Mountain features notable collaborations with avant-garde Nordic composer Arve Henriksen and electronica trailblazers Isan. The title track\, inspired by the local legends and lore of Bróna’s homeland\, tells a tale of a battle between Irish and Scottish giants. Her desire to steer traditional folk into the 21st century is borne out of her immersion in the London Irish music scene (for many years she was lead singer for 6-piece trad outfit The London Lasses) and her longtime love of electronica. Her own songwriting is harnessed in a deep reflection on the natural world. \nThe new album has been broadcast on BBC Radio 2 by Mark Radcliffe\, BBC Radio 3 by Sara Mohr-Pietsch\, BBC6 Music by Iggy Pop and Gideon Coe\, BBC Radio Scotland by Roddy Hart\, BBC Radio Ulster by Lynette Fay\, Eve Blair and Brian Mullen; RTÉ Radio 1 by Ruth Smith\, RnaG by Cian Ó Cíobháin and Lyric FM by John Kelly and Ellen Crannitch; and internationally in Italy\, The Netherlands\, the USA\, Canada and Australia. \nBróna lives in her hometown\, a small village in County Down on the shores of Carlingford Lough where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea. Spending their first year locked in a room\, they worked on playing together without compromising their individual styles and musical pasts\, creating improvised music that is immediate yet familiar. Their chaos will bring our event to a suitably Sabbatic conclusion. \n  \nLOGOS- the producer born James Parker\nis an aural cartographer\, attempting to trace the patterns of Englsih liminality.\, These hinterland fissures are best heard on his album\, the fascinating\, complex\, and impossible to place ‘Imperial Flood’. It’s a record prompted by shifts in his studio set up\, but also by both recollection and imagination\, a twisted take on England’s forgotten environs. As a primarily ambient LP\, it’s these atmospheric tools that contribute most to the ominous mood of ‘Imperial Flood’. Where beats do appear\, they mostly feel coincidental\, as if stumbled across amidst the mist and mire. They work\, in fact\, as an incredibly accurate — in concept if not exactly in timbre — reflection of another of Parker’s influences for the album: the man-made yet slightly unsettling countryside of East England. The fields and the fens and the incessant flatness. An area where the effects of humans are clearly visible\, but that maintains a primordial dread — things that could be said\, too\, of ‘Imperial Flood’. \n  \nTHE HOUSE IN THE WOODS – Pye Corner Audio specialise in majestic\, cinematic electronica that evokes sci-fi soundtracks\, dystopian futures and the sound of haunted dance floors. The discography to date includes ten full length albums and many more singles and EPs across several labels. There are also remixes for John Foxx\, Mogwai\, Ride’s Andy Bell\, Mark Lanegan\, Alice Hubble\, Stealing Sheep\, Knightstown and Dolphin Midwives. \nPye Corner’s Martin Jenkins (aka The Head Technician) is a veteran live performer\, and has played shows and festivals all over Europe\, Canada and the USA. Most notably he has supported Mogwai on several tour dates\, played the Mutek festival in Montreal\, the Mugako Festival in Spain and Barcelona’s Primavera Club. \nPye Corner Audio pieces appear in the soundtrack to Adam Curtis’s 2016 film HyperNormalisation\, the 2018 Shudder TV series\, Deadwax and forthcoming Netflix documentary Slay. After the dissolution of the band in late 1996\, Williamson opted to go solo under the alias of her first name. Though a classically trained pianist and confessional-style singer/songwriter with a uniquely haunting and beautiful voice\, Astrid’s numerous comparisons to Tori Amos were lazy. It reverberates in an endless cathedral to horror and pulsing angelic nightmares that chorally soar into the heights of harmonic beauty whilst a blackened chain link holds you in ethereal limbo\, at one with the synth buzz. \nThis is Nathalie Stern’s long awaited follow-up to Firetales\, which was released almost 10 years ago\, and on initial listen is a very different affair with its intimate vocal loops and strong Scandinavian folk influence. This new album is cavernous in comparison; its opening track begins with a dying breath for all that went before\, then throbs with a rich droning bass synth and echoing vocals backed up by local artists Lindsay Duncanson and Marek ‘Maz’ Gabrysch. Maintaining a folk input in its structure throughout\, the album becomes a Wicker Man-like soundtrack for modernity. Stand out track is Stig In Lucia begins with some beautiful layered traditional sounding folk lyrics and ends with a full-on synth possession that wouldn’t be out of place in the Exorcist. Nathalie fits perfectly into the long burgeoning scene for gothic folk and hauntological synth music as manifested on labels like Ghost Box or A Year In The Country; she evokes a sense of our deeper cultural memory\, of shadows in the woods and of feelings long suppressed or purposely hidden. It’s truly a modern folk tale with consummate sinister undertones to scare you into behaving properly lest the witch gets you. A strong sophomore release that shows maturity and an understanding of theme and tradition\, and I’m hoping it doesn’t take as long to get a third instalment from this intriguing North East-based talent. \nATTN: Magazine Each of these songs is a glimpse of eternity. Their incarnation on Nerves And Skin lasts only a few minutes apiece\, but their recurrent elements – cyclical harmonies\, synthesiser loops – could continue forever\, bearing witness to the flux of the landscape around them over the course of months and years\, never succumbing to the pull of decay. The record reads like a compilation of immutable and immaterial truths\, summoned fleetingly into corporeal life before being released back into the dark. Given Stern’s connection to folk music (beautifully evident in her layered vocal refrains\, which form a crescent around the melody like faces in firelight)\, it’s logical that the execution of these songs should brim with a sense of both heritage and possibility. Yet resting within this edgeless terrain is the mental image of Nathalie’s thoroughly finite home studio: an imagined haven of hardware synths and laptop glow. It’s both a panoramic earthen sprawl and the gestures of a solitary body; each song reaches either into the stratosphere or stops at arm’s length\, depending on how you look at it. \nThe body also looms large within the instrument choices. Most obviously it manifests in the sounds of the body itself: the hissing breaths that punctuate the mantric return of “Luchadora”\, or the wilting choral overdubs on “Interlude”\, and to a certain extent within the exquisite brass section that flowers unexpectedly in the latter half of “Because Science”. But it’s also there in the rudimentary buzz of Stern’s electronics. Save for those murky gusts of drone that swirl through tracks like “Deep Sleep” and “Then You Talk Of War”\, the tones are largely stripped back to a raw palette of unaffected signals and surface fizz. These textures are the very depiction of electronics as a modern extension of the body\, prior to their lifting into the cerebral abstraction of excessive FX and EQ; the melody on “Here To Stay And Here To Belong” throbs as though responding to Stern’s index finger pulse\, with the motif kept simple enough to flow intuitively through the simple twitches of the wrists and hands. More than anything this melodic minimalism only abets the album’s inevitable reprisal by future generations in the decades and centuries ahead\, when the time comes to materialise Stern’s immutable truths once more. \nAural Aggravation \nAlthough now resident in Newcastle\, Stern’s roots are Swedish\, and it’s traditional Swedish folk which informs her music. While I have precisely no knowledge or experience of Swedish folk music\, the compositions here\, as the title suggests\, conjure a sense of the barest essence of human existence. Nerves and skin the components essential to the senses\, especially touch\, are here exposed and highly sensitive. As much as anything it’s the organic feel that permeates the album that renders it so\nsubtly affecting as it drifts and melds to form a sort of biological symbiosis with the listener’s internal mechanisms while it plays. Stern’s voice is the primary instrument here\, and she builds layers of harmony\, often by unconventional means\, with breaths and short\, wordless sounds looped to form cyclical motifs atop sparse synth drones \n‘Luchadora’ brings low-impact\, lurching beats that thud soft and there’s a heartbeat thump on ‘Then You Talk of War’\, which delves into darker territories with moody bass oscillations over which layers of choral vocals build majestically. ‘Deep Sleep’ wheezes monotonously\, a lugubrious drone: Nathalie’s vocal is barely a whisper\, haunting\, ethereal\, the melody a sing-song lullaby with an uncanny\, shadowy twist that may not exactly be Chuck Palahniuk\, but is still moderately unsettling. ‘Moderately unsettling’ is a fair summary of the atmosphere that creeps across the compositions as the album unfolds. Although fear chords creep all over the gloomy ‘Stig in Lucia’\, it’s not overtly dark\, but the disembodied vocal echoes evoke a certain cognitive dissonance. And for all its oddness and otherness\, it’s on an instinctive\, human level that you experience Nerves and Skin: you feel it\, somehow\, almost subliminally\, and it touches parts rarely reached and in ways that are abstract and indefinably\, but nevertheless real. \nBearded Gentlemen Music \nIf your idea of “heavy” is the Misfits or Napalm Death\, it’s likely that Nerves & Skin is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Same goes for pop fans\, indie fans or the great unwashed. This is a very good thing in my opinion as somethings should surprise people\, such as when metalheads in the 90s’ adopted The Prodigy. Nathalie has created a dark\, brooding and pulsating monster here\, one that is beautifully played\, whilst at the same time being uniquely uncomfortable as well. There is a Scott Walker Tilt period atmosphere to the music\, with industrial/avant-garde overtones as well. You will be lucky to find anything as haunting in the winter months as Nerves & Skin\, what a great sophomore record\, get it now! \nThe Sunday Experience \nNew groove from the Cruel Nature imprint\, as ever limited in nature\, just 75 of these all pressed on cassette and probably destined for a quick sell out. This be Nathalie Stern with ‘Nerves and Skin’ from off which we’ve more than mildly smitten (on initial quick listening) with both ‘Spectre’ and the pursuing ‘Stig in Lucia’. The former a shadowy spectral visitation part haunted part hymnal\, a primitive spellweaver sounding much like a fabled siren drawing close all who hear her bewitching love call.
