DESCRIPTION:Three For Silver is a tatterdemalion ensemble of rotating musicians led by Lucas Warford\, “the acid baby of Tom Waits and Les Claypool\,” as NW legend Baby Gramps called him. It’s an aggressively original band that is impervious to easy description. PR people often use phrases like Mythic Americana\, Doomfolk\, or Apocalypso. Some of those are pretty good\, but they still just feel like the desperate necessities of someone forced to fill out a form labelled “genre”. \nThree For Silver features one-of-a-kind instruments you’ve never seen playing styles mixed in ways you’ve never heard. The band has hit the road since 2013\, and their monomaniacal devotion has already led them all over the USA and the world\, from Accordion Festivals in Vienna to Modern Music Expos in Russia\, and even partnering with the US State Department for ongoing cultural exchange tours to countries thirsty for truly original American music. \nThree For Silver returns with a new album and a new sound! This tour debuts their 7th album “Oh! For a Muse of Fire”\, and finds the band tighter than ever before. This long revolving and mutating band has settled down for a moment to feature the line-up of Lucas (strings)\, Mark\n(drums)\, Del (woodwind)\, and Strangely (accordion). After honing a batch of new material throughout the fall tour of 2025\, they went directly into the studio to capture themselves at the height of tightness.“ Oh! For a Muse of Fire” is a freak rock nautical voyage featuring punchy songs\, unlikely\ninstruments\, and\, as ever\, Lucas’ signature vocal growl and virtuosic bass. SUMMARY:MANCHESTER FOLK HORROR VIII
DESCRIPTION:Already\, Manchester Folk Horror 8 is upon us. Whilst the internet continues to debase ideas which turn us on for an a minute or a moment \, we are forced to dig ever deeper to find what it is we seek. To be occult means to hide or conceal. It seems there are very good reasons for that\, not least the dynamics of cringe limbo. So yes\, we indeed\, dig deeper\, reaching for something increasingly unknowable\, and yet all the more enticing for that. \n“Beauty is the beginning of terror” is a more or less a quote from Rainer Maria Rilke’s Poem\, The First Elegy. To gain a sense of it: \nWho\, if I cried out\, would hear me among the Angels’\nOrders? and even if one of them pressed me\nsuddenly to his heart: I’d be consumed\nin his more potent being. For beauty is nothing\nbut the beginning of terror\, which we can still barely endure\,\nand while we stand in wonder it coolly disdains\nto destroy us. Every Angel is terrifying. \nWhy should this be so? Certainly it seems\, in a more prosaic manner\, that beauty is disdained in the arts. What is important to the various bodies which determine the art economy\, that is to say\, the worth of art\, is not that the work be beautiful\, but rather that it mean something…and not only that it mean something\, but that it mean something very particular; that it tell the story of a chosen history in its recording and in the minds of the appreciators and connoisseurs who are both propagator and consumer. \nEvery year I make the same distinction regarding Folk and Horror. That folk is tradition\, an old truth\, often forgotten…and that horror arises from the traumatic reunion with the forgotten. Is it too much of a stretch to place beauty in this category? No. We argue there is something of beauty which robs us of power; which makes a rude mockery of our utilitarian rationalisations. Beauty is not the merely cosmetic\, but the apprehension of cosmic rightness. A hinted at meaning so overwhelming in its extra human authority\, that it should annihilate us utterly were it to notice us\, as we notice it. \nIt is the suggestion of the Absolute. “Be not afraid”\, says the angel\, but they are surely laughing in the awful fashion of angels because they must know that we have no choice. All at once our suspicions regarding the order of things are proven right\, even as we are rendered into ash at the moment of revelation. Think of the death of Semele\, mother of Dionysus\, as when tricked into demanding Zeus reveal his true form\, was consumed by lightning. Or the strange protagonist of Machen’s The White People who falls into a beautiful and horrible truth. The line\, “I have always believed Wonder is of the soul”\, finishes that story. Beauty\, likewise\, is found there and with it come all the hosts of heaven and all the hosts of hell. \nOur line-up this year reflects this fragile and strange dichotomy: \n  \nFOUNDLING is an evolution of Erin Lang’s musical projects ‘Erin Lang & The Foundlings’ and ‘Feral & Stray’. These projects have been blessed with the creative input of a collective of incredibly talented visual collaborators and musicians.\nFor Manchester Folk Horror 8\, Foundling summons a live work shaped around Rainer\nMaria Rilke’s declaration that “beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror.” Here\,\nbeauty is not ornament\, but a pointing to something ancient\, vast\, fragile\, and\nconcealed. A hint of cosmic workings glimpsed only briefly\, before it overwhelms.\nWorking between composition and improvisation\, Foundling (the project of Canadian-\nborn\, Berlin-based sound artist Erin Lang) weaves harp\, voice\, percussion\, and\nresonance into a slow\, ceremonial unfolding. Tones are sustained like held breath;\nmelodies surface and dissolve; voices hover between invocation and warning. The\nmusic engulfs.\nThis is folk horror not as spectacle\, but as reunion. The return of something long buried.\nThe terror does not arrive with violence\, but with quiet recognition. Beauty appears as a\nreflection\, moving from radiance to unease as darkness rises.\nThe performance moves as a rite rather than a concert. Time loosens. Silence thickens.\nSound becomes a veil\, then a tearing of it. Angels and monsters are indistinguishable\nhere\, both are singing with terrifying clarity.\nFoundling offers this music as an act of remembrance and surrender: a passage into\nwonder\, and the quiet terror that follows when we let go into the shadowy parts of myth\nand memory. \n  \nUnderneath the Earth is the debut album from CHIMEHOURS; a hauntological music project for the dislocated present day. Taking inspiration from Max Porter’s novel Lanny\, the album digs into themes of nature\, myth and community\, with an edge of folk-horror. Drones\, drums and gritty guitars are juxtaposed with woodwind\, strings and ethereal song. The album takes musical influence from the likes of Liz Fraser\, Broadcast\, Sun O))))\, Beth Gibbons\, Bibio and Johan Johansson\, and atmospheric cues from The Wickerman\, The Fog\, and Enys Men. \nChimehours is a collaboration between beck goldsmith and jon dix. The pair have previously performed in bands together and composed music for award-winning film and television. They conjured up this foray into cinematic\, horror-flecked contemporary-folk to explore their love of the supernatural and the other-than-human. Chimehours raid the vaults of 70s cinema and trad folk soundscapes to riff on contemporary anxieties and ecological yearning. They perform traditional folk music of the British Isles showcasing themes of the dark and macabre blended with elements of drone and noise music alongside original drone folk pieces and historically accurate charms and prayers from their first album. \n  \nZOLATEC creates music that is both intimate and spiritual\, exploring themes of heartbreak\, identity\, and existential drift through raw and immersive performance.\nGrowing up in Leicester to South Asian and Caribbean parents\, Zolatec played steelpan for most of her life. It wasn’t until the COVID lockdown that she first ventured into electronic music\, opening up a new direction in her sound.\nDrawing from trip hop\, breakcore & witch house\, her music production style has evolved into a diasporic fusion of breakbeats\, shoegaze textures\, and experimental sound design – anchored by ethereal vocals and live steelpan.\nShe aspires to gift her sound to the grassroots community and create meaningful connections through music. \n  \nTHE DARK ARTS RESEARCH KOLLECTIVE CORDIALLY ANNOUNCES: MUSIC OF THE ULTRATERRESTRIALS. Pray attend\, dear listener\, to a most singular entertainment. From the curious archives of Mr. Doug Skinner’s Music of Elsewhere is drawn a selection of airs and strains\, reputedly heard amidst the haunts of beings not of our common sphere—those sprites and sylvan folk\, piskies and trolls\, kelpies and banshees\, whose legends have long beguiled the imagination. These melodies\, once whispered in glen and hollow\, are here presented anew\, refracted through the glass of experimental art\, and rendered for your auditory delight. Come\, partake of this rare occasion\, wherein the harmonies of the unseen shall mingle with the inventions of modern fancy. \nThe DⱯRK Ensemble features\, \nChristopher Gladwin\, an interdisciplinary artist and musician whose work spans electronic music\, sound art\, and performance. Since 1999\, he has produced\, published\, and performed internationally under projects including Team Doyobi\, The Wyrding Module\, and ANZAK. Gladwin’s current research explores the intersections of sound\, technology\, and Occulture—subverting modernity and challenging rationalist paradigms. His work brings together esoteric ontologies\, ritual\, and occultism with electronics\, the scientific imaginary\, and dance music culture\, creating hybrid forms that question dominant narratives and evoke alternative ways of knowing. \nKatie Chatburn is a composer\, sound artist and orchestral arranger with an interest in boundary crossing musical collaborations. In 2017 she founded Ignition Orchestra and has since conducted and arranged for projects that bridge classical and other musical forms\, including starting the Garage Classical project with DJ Spoony. She has worked as an orchestral arranger for artists including Paloma Faith\, The Sugababes\, Aloe Blacc\, Neil Hannon\, Shaznay Lewis\, The Streets\, Katy B\, Ayanna Witter-Johnson and Lady Blackbird and worked for orchestras including Chineke Orchestra\, The BBC Philharmonic and the BBC Concert Orchestra.  Alongside composing for various TV and film commissions\, Katie is developing an original voice as a sound artist and working towards a PhD at MMU. Her focus is on the development of creative sound installations and interventions that explore the relational potential of the city soundscape. \n  \nSONGS OF GREEN PHEASANT is a true rarity\, an emanation of its own subject and a perfect encapsulation of our theme. \n“A schoolteacher from Oughtibridge\, a residential village on the outskirts of Sheffield\, Duncan Sumpner has released a string of records under the name\, Songs Of Green Pheasant\, without ever quite stepping into the light. The project’s origin story speaks volumes about his elusive approach. A demo that Sumpner sent to Fat Cat in 2002 became a fixture on the label’s office stereo. But when they decided to get in contact to offer him a record deal\, the email bounced back\, and it took them years to track him down. DESCRIPTION:ZOE HESELTON is a British-born poet\, songwriter\, guitarist\, and singer based in Strasbourg. Her music – steeped in traditional\, folk\, blues\, and flamenco influences\, spoken word poetry\, and a wide range of eclectic and experimental inspirations – is both intimate and vibrant. Performed with a fierce yet sensitive electric guitar\, her music moves between vulnerability and power\, exploring themes of darkness and healing. Moving between melody and dissonance\, her songs are litanies for survival\, poems of tenderness and rage. \nReleased in April 2025 on the Teenage Menopause Records label\, her debut studio album ‘Another Kind of Suicide‘ was the result of a decade-long writing process. For the project\, she assembled a band she named Sister Outsider— after a poem by Audre Lorde. The group features Inès Rousset (bass)\, Merve Salgar (tanbur)\, Lise Barkas (hurdy-gurdy)\, Liliane Chansard (vocals)\, Quentyn Risjeterre (bells)\, and Harutaka Mochizuki (saxophone).\n\nCREEPY CRAWLY is the project of Bristol-born and Manchester-based musician Rachel Cawley\, weaving bittersweet narratives through shimmering\, multilayered songwriting. Her distinctive crystalline vocals guide listeners through ethereal dreamscapes\, moments of eerie unease\, and the satisfying crunch of ’90s alt-rock melancholy. \nGrowing up in the rural West of England\, her music is\, in part\, inspired by a childhood soundtracked by folk revival artists and traditional British folk music. But the pull of the city was huge and\, aged 18\, she moved to London and submerged herself in the many worlds of music available to her there – working at venues\, writing for music magazines\, temping at record labels – and going to a lot of gigs. But\, as it so often does\, London spat her back out. And so\, during a period of self-reckoning with the question of “how the hell did I get here?”\,  living a life that seemed frighteningly ordinary\, she returned to writing songs – tracing out the path of how she found herself in a place she didn’t want to be – and armed with newfound hope and resilience\, plotting a route back out of it. \nThe result of this reflective work is her debut album ‘Like a Real Thing’\, which will be self-released on May 30th 2025 and draws from a diverse palette of influences including Scott Walker\, Big Thief\, Laura Marling\, Anne Briggs\, Cat Power\, Breeders and Heatmiser. \nNATHAN STOKER is a trumpet player and producer whose dizzying talent sees him plumb ever more haunting sonic worlds\, evoking rain slick neon and flickering post modern hallucination. His writing is eclectic yet unmistakably his own\, shaped by the many musical worlds he’s wandered through. \nRaised in Nottinghamshire and steeped in the echoes of the UK blues and folk revival\, Clarke grew into a true troubadour—rolling from country to country\, banjo slung over his shoulder\, carrying songs like companions. “I love the access that being a musician gives you into other lives\,” he says. “I like being brave with it and seeing where it gets me.” The result is a body of work woven from countless stories—some light\, some heavy\, all deeply human—that ripple through his songs. \n \nJude Brothers is a folk derived singer-songwriter from Arkansas\, with a penchant for whimsy and tender heartedness. SUMMARY:CANCELLED TUPENNY BUNTERS 'THIS IS HOW IT ENDS TOUR 2025'
DESCRIPTION:Dave and Fi Dulake became TUPPENNY BUNTERS in 2012\, the same year they got married. Fi had been the Hammond player in Dave’s previous band\, The Virgo Intacta\, who were on The White Stripes “Satan” tour as 1st support. Parallel to running a notorious Southend music pub\, The Railway Hotel\, the duo\, after naming themselves after Regency prostitutes\, set about capturing the sound they perceived\, a piano dripping garage/pop wall of melodies and chord shifts. Their first album was recorded live to a Studer in the cellar of the pub. They released it on their own label\, Dansettual.  Called “A Tuppenny Upright”\, the results\, while sketchy\, present them well. At times\, the piano (a Bluthner upright) threatens to cuddle you to death\, at others it appears to be absently flipping you off\, and the drums are tuned high\, dirty and loonar. If they were cleverer\, or could be bothered\, they’d be prog. Cooler\, or if they both dressed like Fi\, they’d be psyche\, and if they didn’t constantly feel the need to burst into song\, for their sheer sonic nerve they’d be garage. The Bunters songwriting is all the way down the cracks between Pete Ham\, Syd Barrett and Lionel Bart\, but their live performance sits precariously on a web spun by X Ray Spex\, The White Stripes\, Wings and\, well\, Sparks\, I guess – in that\, you’re never quite sure who to watch. She smashes shit out of the kit with her hair going everywhere\, while he\, 20 years older and desperate to keep up\, pounds the Fender Rhodes and screams his fucking head off\, trying always for a snarling Steve Marriott but coming off more like an enraged Dean Friedman. Then they swap\, and now you’re totally on the back foot\, cos now he’s laying into the kit\, and she’s up…her intense brown eyes staring you down; melodies from an age way before her time and a piercing\, shrieking voice that only ever seems at home above top C.   Fingernails scraping down a Marmite smeared blackboard. You won’t go to the bar though\, cos then there are the songs\, which\, possibly against your better judgement\, will tick one of your boxes. They’ll take you on an uncomfortable switchback ride through pop music’s wheat and chaff\, and just when you think you’ve dissed it or nailed it\, when you think “I can hear a bit of 10CC and The Damned in there…” then Billy Childish pops in with Julie Andrews and you still won’t know whether they’re tossers or visionarys. A review for Dave’s “Butterfingers” album in The Face back in 2003 called it “annoying and refreshing in equal parts”. \n  \nNow it’s the HOW IT ENDS tour. Hopefully not too soon! \nINDIAN PALE MALE is former Frazer King genius\, Nathan McIlroy’s latest project. Following a period of self imposed exile\, Nathan has returned–and Manchester is better for it. Now armed with a single piano\, IPM is a unique\, funny\, sometimes tortured\, sometimes jazzy excursion which\, if McIlroy chooses\, will only go on to garner further acclaim. He’ll be playing with the full band tonight\, so look out \n  \nFinally MANCUNION emerge as mystery players\, hotly tipped by the Bunters themselves. Whether Finchler is playing drums for Sea Urchin (Ba Da Bing Records)\, making videos for the likes of Ought and Charlotte Cornfield\, starring in them for Katie Von Schleicher\, or releasing clickbait videos and a book “of haunted hayriders’ quotations overheard by the grim reaper himself\,” his overarching mission shines through. \n“Like the Beatles on NyQuil” \nCREEPY CRAWLY is the project of Bristol-born and Manchester-based musician Rachel Cawley\, weaving bittersweet narratives through shimmering\, multi-layered song writing. Her distinctive crystalline vocals guide listeners through ethereal dreamscapes\, moments of eerie unease\, and the satisfying crunch of ’90s alt-rock melancholy. \nGrowing up in the rural West of England\, her music is\, in part\, inspired by a childhood soundtracked by folk revival artists and traditional British folk music. But the pull of the city was huge and\, aged 18\, she moved to London and submerged herself in the many worlds of music available to her there – working at venues\, writing for music magazines\, temping at record labels – and going to a lot of gigs. But\, as it so often does\, London spat her back out. And so\, during a period of self-reckoning with the question of “how the hell did I get here?”\,  living a life that seemed frighteningly ordinary\, she returned to writing songs – tracing out the path of how she found herself in a place she didn’t want to be – and armed with newfound hope and resilience\, plotting a route back out of it. \nThe result of this reflective work is her debut album ‘Like a Real Thing’\, which will be self-released on May 30th 2025 and draws from a diverse palette of influences including Scott Walker\, Big Thief\, Laura Marling\, Anne Briggs\, Cat Power\, Breeders and Heatmiser. \nBORN in the Lake District\, raised in a creative Manchester household\, Oliver began playing the drums at age 7; teaching himself bass and guitar from the age of 16. Self recording from his home studio\, Oliver first released music with radical expression\, under the name ‘A Polar Rose’\, where he first experienced the catharsis of sharing music. Emerging as OLIVER LOUIS\, he took to the Manchester live music scene\, combining naïve lyricism with mature acoustic fingerpicking; all the while\, expanding his recording techniques behind closed doors. Here he was able to combine non-traditional percussion with modern technology\, transporting folk music into the realm of psychedelia.

DESCRIPTION:ERIC CHENAUX is a Canadian guitarist\, songwriter\, singer and sound sculptor. He has released seven full-length solo albums on the Montréal imprint Constellation\, charting an adventurous and uncompromising path through avant-folk and out-jazz compositions increasingly rooted in a unique and elemental juxtaposition of fried\, frazzled\, semi-improvised guitar and smooth\, clear tenor balladry. Chenaux has been called “a musician like no other” by Tiny Mix Tapes; his solo work praised by The Quietus as “stunningly beautiful\, genuinely inimitable\, whose reputation will only grow with time.” Gracing the cover of The Wire magazine in 2017\, the feature article declared: “A singer and songwriter possessed of angelic sweetness and clarity accompanying himself with largely improvised\, visceral guitar textures that seem intent on undermining and obscuring his own songs. It’s the need to communicate tussling with the urge to obfuscate; lucidity versus opacity; form against chaos.” \n\nZOLATEC is an experienced pannist and music producer. Inspired by music ranging from metal to dub\, she uses software to fuse these influences into her own dark & melodic compositions\, creating a unique live set performed differently each time. Breakbeats stutter in dark soundscapes\, cut with steelpan polyrhythms\, ethereal vocals and shoegaze textures. Wide basslines pay homage to sound system subs\, shaping dynamic build-ups and heavy drops. \n  \nDAVID BIRCHALL is a guitarist\, free improviser and composer living in Manchester. He has performed in the UK\, Europe\, Russia\, Palestine\, USA & Japan. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3\, BBC Radio 6 Music\, SWR in Germany\, WFMU in the US & ABC in Australia. He’s still convinced the practical musical experiences of free improvisation and consensus/dialogue social forms it models offer us one of the best ways through all this.

Without further ado\, let’s bio him:\nIt’s hard to find a profile like Manu Louis in music….\nBelgium born\, now Berlin based\, he studied composition with legendary composer Fréderic Rzewski\, electronic music on the internet\, and dancing during his concerts.\nA Passionate singer\, and knob agitator\, he also plays the guitar in his own unique punk jazz way…\nEqually at home working with electronic dance\, classical or jazz musicians\, Manu has performed his stuff from completely acoustic solo up to 200 wind players and everything in between.\nIn his music (fortunately\, as is the case today for many young musicians) style doesn’t exist. He mixes things that cross his path\, and creates new adventures of provocative and decontextualized juxtapositions. His general blueprint remains the same throughout\, but the ingredients he uses vary; from dissident chanson française\, genial dilettante\, avant-garde composers\, new beat\, old hits\, art-pop & hard bop.\nUnder his name\, Manu has released three LP’s and several 7’’ on Igloo Records\, Le Pacifique records and New Pangea. Recent years saw him perform his electronic solo shows more than 500 times in Europe and Asia (including: Bimhuis [Amsterdam]\, Fusion Festival [Lärz]\, Tremor Fest [Acores]\, La Casa Encendida [Madrid]\, PopKultur [Berlin]\, Tsutavo o Nest [Tokyo]\, DDC [Beijing] and Contrapop [Ramsgate]). DESCRIPTION:Rotterdam’s Rats On Rafts are David Fagan\, Arnoud Verheul\, Natasha van Waardenburg and Mathijs Burgler. \nThe Rats’ proclivity for things eroded by the decay of time has remained a constant in their rigorous hands-on ethos. The Moon Is Big (2011)\, Tape Hiss (2015)\, and Excerpts Of Chapter 3: The Mind Runs A Net Of Rabbit Paths (2021) are truly gripping timestamps of a band refusing to give in to the supposed ‘progress of the world’ – first as hungry punk rock upstarts\, then as fiery analogue recording dogmatists and psych-rock protagonists. \nKnown for their explosive live performances\, they have toured across Europe and performed at festivals including Glastonbury\, Eurosonic and Le Guess Who. They have also shared the stage with Pere Ubu\, The Chills and The Nightingales. In 2019 they joined Franz Ferdinand on tour in Japan\, playing to huge arenas across the country. DESCRIPTION:By some quirk of fate or destiny\, we have arrived at the Seventh instalment of the Manchester Folk Horror Festival. Each year we try to approach that innocuous compound from a fresh angle. Indeed\, last year’s journey took us to the threshold of where we stand now\, upon the edge of a precipice. The number seven means magic and trouble. It is right then\, that we focus upon the age old myth of the Grail…let’s turn to the dictionary: \n1\nCapitalised: the cup or platter used according to medieval legend by Christ at the Last Supper and thereafter the object of knightly quests\n2\n: the object of an extended or difficult quest \nSo far so good. The notion that the Grail was used by Christ at the Last Supper is but one truth in a panoply of myths fading into the mists of time. Nevertheless it is a potent enough image to serve as the goal of perhaps the greatest of quests. \nWe live in dark times\, facing down existential destruction from a bewildering array of angles. What solution is there to be found\, short of accepting our fate and rejoicing into the dark\, until the last fire has burnt out? \nPerhaps none. But what if the horror came not from the last dance\, but from the possibility that there might be a greater call to a heavy responsibility? What if merely sitting back and watching as the world falls into night\, is not our destiny? What if we are called to set out into that night in search of…something; in search of something unknowable and unprovable? \nThis edition of the Manchester Folk Horror explores this idea. It is not a call to activism. It is a call to head forth into the utter unknown\, with nothing so much as one’s soul at stake. \nAs ever\, art allows us to examine this notion safely\, as if through a long distance telescope. In a quest filled with symbols\, music remains our most potent ally and most revealing lens. The date will be February 1st\, 2025. The location will be\, as ever\, The Peer Hat. We offer this event up to the Goddess Herself. (so that she might see that we are trying.) \nGNOD’s legend\, of a Salford collective emerging from the lives of desperate individuals; from a host of musical backgrounds; forming something like a singularity of sound; a sonic point of massive gravity; is one well know to locals. Indeed\, it is a legend that has seem them receive unanimous global and critical renown. They will be closing Folk Horror VII in what might be seen as the final sonic act of our micro epic. An irresistible banishment. \nThis year’s guest speaker\, is none other than JOHN MATTHEWS. Once described as ‘Oxford’s answer to all things mythic’\, John has been a professional independent scholar since 1980. He has made a lifetime study of the legends of King Arthur\, and more recently of the history of piracy. His list of publications totals over 100\, including Pirates (Athenaeum) which was a number one New York Times best seller for 22 weeks and was translated into 18 languages. He has acted as an advisor on several big budget movies\, including King Arthur\, Pirates of the Caribbean and Prince of Persia. His work on the education DVD to accompany King Arthur won a BAFTA award in 2003.\nHis best known and most widely read works are ‘Pirates’ (Carlton/ Athenaeum)\,  ‘The Grail\, Quest for Eternal Life’ (Thames & Hudson\, 1981) ‘The Winter Solstice’ (Quest Books\, 1999) which won the Benjamin Franklin Award for that year\, and ‘The Wildwood Tarot’ which has sold over half a million copies worldwide and is the second best-selling tarot of all time.. His book ‘Celtic Warrior Chiefs’ was a New York Public Library recommended title for young people\, and the more recent ‘Arthur of Albion’ won a Gold Medal from NAPPA\, a gold Moonbeams award and a BIB Golden Apple Award. \nHis love of Tarot and divination began when he devised the best-selling Arthurian Tarot\, with Caitlin Matthews in the 1980s. It has sold in the region of 150\,000 copies world-wide and had been though three editions. Since then he has worked on and devised a number of successful decks including\, The Wildwood Tarot (with Mark Ryan) The Shaman’s Oracle and The Camelot Oracle\, The Lost Tarot of Nostradamus\, The Steampunk Tarot: Gods of the Machine  (with Caitlin Matthews and Wil Kinghan)\, The Sherlock Holmes Tarot and The Oracle of Dr John Dee. His latest adventuress in Tarot include The Cather Tarot (with Wil Kinghan)\, The Byzantine Tarot with Cilla Conway\, and The Tarot of Light and Shadow with Andrea Aste.\nOxford\, UK. \nJohn’s most recent works include a study of the Temples of the Grail\, a new approach to tarot in The Fool’s New Journey\, and the stunningly illustrated Goblin Market Tarot. He is currently working on Realms of Arthur the second of a two-volume set of books retelling the little known myths of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table illustrated by John Howe\, key illustrator of the Lord of the Rings books and films. \nThe most experimental aspect of the day will be found in a special live rendition of GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT in all of its\, yes\, three hour immensity (there will be an intermission\, naturally). Expect an epic yet also simple\, mystical humble and hypnotic performance of an almost altogether similarly epic poem. One of only a few great epics of the English language. \nWritten in the High Medieval period\, in in a local North West Midlands dialect of Middle English\, in a largely. alliterative verse form more commonly accosted with the earlier Anglo Saxon period by an unknown poet and rendered into Modern English by local lad and poet laureate Simon Armitage. Mysterious in both origin and nature; it weaves together English\, Welsh and Irish mythology\, the French chivalric tradition\, both Christian and pagan tropes and fantastically realistic imagery from the natural world\, our very own\, local to us\, Peak District\, in particular\, all to truly spellbinding effect. \nPerformed by Salford Media City leader and local historian\, DAVID JACKSON\, alongside guitar maestro\, DBH. \nBEN MCELROY The first of our artists who were down to play last year\, but were ultimately foiled by unpredictable events. “In genre and form alike\, McElroy is ambiguous\, operating at the margins of several genres and thereby creating a sound that’s truly his own. In a world with no shortage of ambient records\, McElroy’s musical worldview encompasses ambient but isn’t constrained by it. Instead\, he is fluent in ambient\, drone and folk\, and he combines them masterfully. He is comfortable in the language of fingerpicked guitar and bowed strings\, but he can also create wobbly\, pulsating drones to go with them. ” \nWOODEN TAPES were denied playing last year due to cruel and unusual destiny. However\, 2025 sees this circumstance rectified. In May 2023\, musician and writer\, Tim Maycox’s Wooden Tape project delivered the album ‘Music From Another Place’ … a timeless collection of music that recalls pastoral lands\, summer months and folk rituals.\nHaving played in various bands\, supporting acts such as Teeth of the Sea and Mainliner and playing Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia\, Tim has recently turned his attention to writing a set of pieces based on his memories of children’s television themes coupled with flashes of acid folk and classic OST music of the 1970’s & 80’s. Sonically the album is awash with picked acoustic guitars\, percussive adornments\, warm synth pads and organ. The titles themselves\, suggest lost soundtracks or memories of forgotten TV themes. \nM-ORCHESTRA We welcome the Fortean electronica of London-based musician Martin Belam. Consciously navigating that rich seam of the uncanny; the almost documentary surrealism of the pre-Folk Horror genre 70s\, M-Orchestra is a welcome bout of what one might accurately label ‘hauntronic’\, using various media to form a cut-up snapshot of another\, perhaps truer reality. Damned facts indeed. \nSISTER MONICA is the patron saint of married women; difficult marriages; disappointing children; victims of adultery or unfaithfulness; victims of (verbal) abuse; and conversion of relatives. Also alcoholics. A movement beyond spectacle into a liminal sonic territory from artist\, Anne Louise Kershaw. \nFUTURES WE LOST invokes a dark post-industrial\, cinematic techno soundscape. Future visions collide with crumbling mills amidst the industrial scars of the northern English landscape. Sometimes a brutalist techno monolith to this mechanised slavery nightmare\, sometimes a dark ambient soundtrack to the distortion and living death of our dreams. A sonic memorial to all those futures we lost. \nCHELSEA HARE returns for this seventh festival. An artist of prodigious skill and talent\, his music explores genuinely unknown territories\, married to the clever melody and harmony. His mediations on this years theme\, promise to be revelatory. (The man is as modest as they come and would hate me saying that. Nevertheless.) \nELLA KAY is an electro acoustic composer and sound artist. Focusing on fixed media acousmatic works\, her work explore the intricacies of sound and humanity through a variety of auditory experiences. Moving\, uncanny and occasionally terrifying. This is art that exalts in the indulgent luxury of the sonic everyday. \nGARY FISHER is an artist and improviser who’s work primarily explores sound through objects\, actions\, ideas\, words and places. He has made performances\, installations and interventions in concert halls\, galleries\, public spaces\, living rooms and on live radio as well as producing many recorded and visual pieces. \nTHE MANIFESTATION GROUP have been compared to a host of artists\, Love; Broadcast and Syd Barrett amongst them. The duo of Haya Moon and Nick Alexander emphasise an approach that demands the removal of the artist\, as much as possible\, from the intent of the song\, recognising an agency in art and music that is extra-human. Each song is an ambassador from an different place\, with the pair acting as hosts for the guests. DESCRIPTION:MORGAN GARRETT has long been a stalwart presence in independent American experimental music. The 2024 release of Purity on Orange Milk Records\, his acclaimed fifth full length and first vinyl release\, underscores his commitment to his craft and to the wider world of challenging electronic music. Purity is a response to finding a neighbor’s dead body. While processing this trauma and his own relationship with suicidal ideation\, Morgan Garrett created an album of dissonance and fragile voice\, oscillating between dense electric guitars and anxiety ridden whispers. This mesh of avant-garde electronics\, rock instrumentation and hi-fidelity production is a new assertion in underground music.\nMorgan followed this release with the “Purity USA Tour”\, a 46 day self-booked headlining tour extending across the CONUS\, performing at venues such as Zebulon (LA)\, Johnny Brenda’s (PHL) and Trans Pecos (NYC). The live set begins in darkness: Morgan sitting down as he nervously lines his hands through his face and hair. ASMR-like sounds of creaky floorboards\, crackling fire\, and industrial noise play through his PA while footlights begin to flicker. After a break of silence\, Morgan explodes into song as he shreds through tracks from the LP with punishing live vocals\, effected acoustic guitar\, and blistering strobe lighting. The footlights and strobes cast giant shadows behind him as he flails and falls onto the ground\, presenting an image like a person on fire. In full visibility\, his gestures and expressions are exaggerated and extreme\, reminiscent of Butoh. All the while his soaring voice and electronic avant-garde backing band crash onto the audience like a shockwave of discontent.
