SUMMARY:ERIC CHENAUX WITH ZOLATEC & DAVID BIRCHALL
DESCRIPTION:ERIC CHENAUX is a Canadian guitarist\, songwriter\, singer and sound sculptor. He has released seven full-length solo albums on the Montréal imprint Constellation\, charting an adventurous and uncompromising path through avant-folk and out-jazz compositions increasingly rooted in a unique and elemental juxtaposition of fried\, frazzled\, semi-improvised guitar and smooth\, clear tenor balladry. Chenaux has been called “a musician like no other” by Tiny Mix Tapes; his solo work praised by The Quietus as “stunningly beautiful\, genuinely inimitable\, whose reputation will only grow with time.” Gracing the cover of The Wire magazine in 2017\, the feature article declared: “A singer and songwriter possessed of angelic sweetness and clarity accompanying himself with largely improvised\, visceral guitar textures that seem intent on undermining and obscuring his own songs. It’s the need to communicate tussling with the urge to obfuscate; lucidity versus opacity; form against chaos.” \n\nZOLATEC is an experienced pannist and music producer. Inspired by music ranging from metal to dub\, she uses software to fuse these influences into her own dark & melodic compositions\, creating a unique live set performed differently each time. Breakbeats stutter in dark soundscapes\, cut with steelpan polyrhythms\, ethereal vocals and shoegaze textures. Wide basslines pay homage to sound system subs\, shaping dynamic build-ups and heavy drops. \n  \nDAVID BIRCHALL is a guitarist\, free improviser and composer living in Manchester. He has performed in the UK\, Europe\, Russia\, Palestine\, USA & Japan. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3\, BBC Radio 6 Music\, SWR in Germany\, WFMU in the US & ABC in Australia. He’s still convinced the practical musical experiences of free improvisation and consensus/dialogue social forms it models offer us one of the best ways through all this.

SUMMARY:XAV CLARKE WITH LIEI & YCLEPT
DESCRIPTION:XAV CLARKE is a UK based artist\, composer\, and songwriter\, who’s musical style could best be described as imaginative\, playful\, and fantastical with a wondering sophistication and curiosity that welcome listeners into his rainbow world of complex sounds\, textures\, and emotions.\n\n\n\n\nAs an HMMA and 2 x MASA nominated composer\, Xav has written songs\, music and score for numerous animated series including the BAFTA winning The Amazing World of Gumball\, the latest offering from Cartoon Network\, the Sci-fi adventure; Elliott From Earth (for which he received a Music + Sound Awards Nomination) Hanna-Barbera’s The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe\, and most recently the Joseph Gordon-Levitt produced Wolfboy and The Everything Factory for Apple TV+ \nAway from animation\, Xav scored and written original songs for the intimate and darkly humorous feature documentary Red Herring\, premiering at Sheffield DocFest 2023.As a musician Xav produces his unique brand of psychedelic pop with bands Itchy Teeth\, Captain Fix & The Midnight Honeys\,Starfish Men and Mozart Estate. Playing in bands and writing songs since a teenager\, Xav has spent as much time in his bedroom making records as he has touring Europe with his band and experimenting live. As a guitarist Xav has appeared in Danny Boyle’s film Yesterday\, performed on soundtracks and been lucky enough to work with acclaimed composers Daniel Pemberton and Michael Giacchino.Xav’s debut solo album\, the psychedelic and dreamy ‘magic arrow’ was released last year\, and he is currently working a follow up and a soundtrack release to Red Herring simultaneously. \nHe is also scoring a forthcoming animated series for Nickelodeon. \n  \n\n\n\nLIEI is a solo artist who creates an evocative\, retro-futuristic soundscape\, contrasting lo-fi analogue textures\, with the use of a theremin\, against glitchy electronic rhythms. Taking influence from her dual Chinese-Irish heritage\, Liei draws upon themes of migration\, displacement and belonging\, taking listeners on a strange\, other-worldly sonic journey\, reminiscent of dreamlike neo-noir cinema. \n  \nThe output of Manchester artist YCLEPT is queasily textured and pallidly atmosphæred. They are currently working on their first record under this new alias. The music they produce and perform is at turns vibrant and cold\, and densely detailed \n\n\n

SUMMARY:ROLLER DERBY (HAMBURG) WITH ADJUSTMENTS
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating their own introversion\, deceleration\, contemplation and depth\, the album marks the climax in the four year history of ROLLER DERBY. Founded by Philine Meyer and Manuel Romero Soria\, the duo have worked at building a wide following\, honing their craft of creating exquisite dream-pop; now ready to share a collection of songs that is both profound and uplifting in equal measure. Embodying a sparkling bittersweet mix of joy and melancholy throughout\, When The Night Comes showcases the duo’s ability to meticulously interweave the luscious celestial vocals of Meyer with glistening multi-layered soundscapes and raw textures to create something truly captivating.\n\nOffering stirring meditations on themes ranging from accepting change (‘Ready To Forget’) and enduring personal challenges (‘Silver Jet’)\, to the emotional highs and lows of an intense relationship (‘Dreams’)\, musically the album evokes a sense of nostalgia – with clear shades of ‘80s synth-driven pop and fuzzy ‘00s indie – whilst creating a fresh\, innovative sound which is utterly unique to Roller Derby.\n\n\nADJUSTMENTS play noisy pop with vulnerable lyrics\, syrupy hooks and gravelly guitars that will make your heart sing and ears ring in equal measure. The Manchester-based trio (with roots in Cardiff and Bradford) first release is Bendy A/Who You Want. Both songs are honest and confrontational – they reflect the heat and hurt of the arguments we have with ourselves and the people we care about.

SUMMARY:MANU LOUIS & GUESTS
DESCRIPTION:Once more with excessive feeling\, we bring back Peer Hat talisman\, MANU LOUIS. He’s been travelling with us from the beginning and represents something of that searching spirit that this place seems to value so much. Without further ado\, let’s bio him:\nIt’s hard to find a profile like Manu Louis in music….\nBelgium born\, now Berlin based\, he studied composition with legendary composer Fréderic Rzewski\, electronic music on the internet\, and dancing during his concerts.\nA Passionate singer\, and knob agitator\, he also plays the guitar in his own unique punk jazz way…\nEqually at home working with electronic dance\, classical or jazz musicians\, Manu has performed his stuff from completely acoustic solo up to 200 wind players and everything in between.\nIn his music (fortunately\, as is the case today for many young musicians) style doesn’t exist. He mixes things that cross his path\, and creates new adventures of provocative and decontextualized juxtapositions. His general blueprint remains the same throughout\, but the ingredients he uses vary; from dissident chanson française\, genial dilettante\, avant-garde composers\, new beat\, old hits\, art-pop & hard bop.\nUnder his name\, Manu has released three LP’s and several 7’’ on Igloo Records\, Le Pacifique records and New Pangea. Recent years saw him perform his electronic solo shows more than 500 times in Europe and Asia (including: Bimhuis [Amsterdam]\, Fusion Festival [Lärz]\, Tremor Fest [Acores]\, La Casa Encendida [Madrid]\, PopKultur [Berlin]\, Tsutavo o Nest [Tokyo]\, DDC [Beijing] and Contrapop [Ramsgate]). Travelling with a village of electronic instruments\, and video projections from pop stars to animals\, he delivers passionate performances that switch gear into impromptu discotheque.\nRecently\, Manu has collaborated with Front de Cadeaux\, Héctor Arnau\, Ilan Manouach\, Systaime\, Escif\, Dawanggang and Carl Roossens.\nWith Sylvain Chauveau\, he co-founded Zero Carbon Records (an impossible label converted into ‘no oil/no electricity’ tours). With Mary Ocher\, he has co-curated the Underground Institute Festival (Berlin). And with Adrien Lambinet\, he co-directed ‘Music for Trees’\, a tribute to Garrett List.\nManu also gives workshops\, lectures\, makes DJ sets\, and has done mixes for Kiosk Radio\, Hotel Radio Paris\, Gonzai\, Noods\, Jolt Radio and Reboot FM.\n\n\nIf Amy Winehouse and Tom Waits had a love child with a sweet\, sweet voice\, that blessed infant might not sound unlike LAUREN YOUNG. An accomplished classical pianist who can turn her hand to jazz\, blues and self-professed “nightmare pop”\, Young creates a strikingly original sound\, colouring her self-penned songs with an expansive emotional palette. But this is not painting by numbers! From big lush arrangements to whispered heart-break lullabies\, the pain\, the joy and the wonder are as real and tangible as Young’s Stockport roots. A rare jewel in Manchester’s grimy crown.\n\nPSYCH LANDFILL are a brand new project. Scuzzed out\, mind battered Velvet Underground demo tapes merge with the sound of Japanese psych fuzz terrorists\, Les Rallizes Dénudés\, spiced with a hint of Scott 4. Ones to watch!

SUMMARY:THE RAZORBLADES//VELVET TUXEDO//PSYCH LANDFILL
DESCRIPTION:THE RAZORBLADES are a three piece from Wiesbaden / Germany\, offering high energy surf punk that ranges from the Californian twang of Dick Dales to the surf punk of the Turbo ACs to modern rockabilly à la Brian Setzer. Wild\, sweaty\, energetic and faster than the police allows… sounds like DICK DALE on speed\, the Pulp Fiction soundtrack in turbo mode or a 120 mph car chase on the California coast with loud punk rock on the car radio…no seatbelt attached! \nAn ecstatic stage show and loud guitars are included for free 🙂 \nSince 2002\, the trio around mastermind Rob Razorblade has been driving along the world’s highways and has impressed people at over 700 concerts in a wide variety of locations: sweaty clubs\, on the beach in Huntington Beach\, in a Roman fort or at a rock’n’roll wrestling show. Everywhere people danced to Rob Razorblade’s oceanic guitar melodies and ended the evening with ringing ears and a huge grin on their face. \nWithout stylistic blinders\, THE RAZORBLADES not only inspire die-hard surfheads on 9 albums\, but also make skaters\, rockabillys\, punk rockers\, skins and indie boys and girls happy… \n  \n\nLatest Peer Hat favourites\, Yorkshire four piece\, VELVET TUXEDO are a guitar driven band and with an energy that only an exposed electrical socket could hit you with. That is if you would be so daring as to touch it…\n\n\nSurfing the ragged waves of US 60’s Garage and resurrecting the energy from the British Freakbeat scene circa 65/66\, Velvet Tuxedo offer sounds that risk turning you away from the standard pop charts to delve deep into a record store’s “rare finds” box in search of something best played in cloud of purple haze.\n\n\nPSYCH LANDFILL are a brand new project. Scuzzed out\, mind battered Velvet Underground demo tapes merge with the sound of Japanese psych fuzz terrorists\, Les Rallizes Dénudés\, spiced with a hint of Scott 4. Ones to watch!

SUMMARY:EKHO by JOHN DORR with BURN INTO SLEEP & NATIONAL CRISIS
DESCRIPTION:JOHN DORR is a British born French based composer and performer. After graduating in 2012 with a BMus in classical music he created the instrumental neo classical band Stems\, releasing 4 albums and a BFI funded live soundtrack for the George Melies silent film A trip to the moon\, touring Europe several times and performing over 400 concerts. More recently he composed the soundtrack for Between the lights which garnered favourable reviews in The Guardian and Variety magazine. He will be performing an  immersive concert (EKHO) based on Ovid’s Echo\, with songs influenced by the parallels between the ancient myth and the modern world of digital communication. \nBURN INTO SLEEP David McCLean\, Manchester’s dark star\, puts together a new cast of noir stained spelunkers. An excursion not to be missed. \nNATIONAL CRISIS Adrian and Char are two improv artists who perform together in multiple improv bands – Fraud Couture & Gout\, whilst regularly performing as a duo. Expect circuit bent toys\, drone\, sax and contradictory\, cohesive forms of chaos.

SUMMARY:KAČKALA & WITH OLIVER LOUIS & INDIAN PALE MALE
DESCRIPTION:KAČKALA (pronounced kotch-kolla)\, the unorthodox\, all-women vocal band from Czechia and the U.S.\, is thrilled to tour the UK for the first time in April 2025. Their mad girl\, sad girl\, and bad girl original compositions are full of complex arrangements and rich harmonies. Kačkala’s spirited songs inspire emotion\, empowerment\, and sometimes\, revolutionary thought. Their mesmerizing live performances have dynamic presence and fierce energy in any venue. \nAn idiomatic\, unclassifiable creation bringing furious words of wisdom to you in their tunes\, femme fatale liberation songs and a few morbid numbers thrown in for good measure. Through a mix of empowering mad girl\, bad girl\, and sad girl original compositions\, international flair\, and a dash of homemade choreography\, Kačkala creates dynamic and theatrically entertaining performances. \n  \nBorn in the Lake District\, raised in a creative Manchester household\, Oliver began playing the drums at age 7; teaching himself bass and guitar from the age of 16. Self recording from his home studio\, Oliver first released music with radical expression\, under the name ‘A Polar Rose’\, where he first experienced the catharsis of sharing music. Emerging as OLIVER LOUIS\, he took to the Manchester live music scene\, combining naïve lyricism with mature acoustic fingerpicking; all the while\, expanding his recording techniques behind closed doors. Here he was able to combine non-traditional percussion with modern technology\, transporting folk music into the realm of psychedelia. \n  \nINDIAN PALE MALE is former Frazer King genius\, Nathan McIlroy’s latest project. Following a period of self imposed exile\, Nathan has returned–and Manchester is better for it. Now armed with a single piano\, IPM is a unique\, funny\, sometimes tortured\, sometimes jazzy excursion which\, if McIlroy chooses\, will only go on to garner further acclaim. Check it out.

SUMMARY:THE ALL NIGHT CHEMIST//KENNY//GABRIELLE GEE
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield based singer\, songwriter and banjo player Jimmy Grayburn is the frontman of THE ALL NIGHT CHEMIST. He’s travelling the UK  with a small band to celebrate his latest single and the\nrelease of a deluxe edition of his debut album on vinyl. His music combines American and British folk music with 70s rock and 90s absurdist indie\, with a sound like Johnny Flynn\, Neil Young and Wilco\, with a touch of They Might Be Giants.\nIt walks a delicate line between the domestic and the surreal\, the tragic and the comic. With anything from cheesy pop bangers about mobile phones\, to dark trad folk fighting the modern-day fur industry\, his music has storytelling at its heart. \n‘Daft and Irresistible’ – Tom Robinson\, BBC 6 Music \nSKYMOUTH SAYS “I pity the fool who tries to BURN GRAY” \n  \nKENNY are a wild bunch of true punk\, indie eccentrics and are fast making a name for themselves on the Manchester scene\, notably garnering attention for their performance at The Eagle. \nSKYMOUTH SAYS “Mark E. Smith was there and he said it was truly unmissable stuff” \nGABRIELLE GEE is an upcoming singer songwriter from the Manchester area. With influences ranging from 90s alternative rock\, through shoegaze and indie folk\, to her contemporaries\, Phoebe Bridgers\, Julien Baker and Clairo\, Gabrielle’s music has been described as contemporary and ethereal indie with a dreamy feel. She is currently finalising her first single release and gigging around the Greater Manchester area. \n  \nSKYMOUTH SAYS \n“18 years old! Skymouth\, however\, is bodiless!”

SUMMARY:ALGIS FEDIAJEVAS WITH LEILA'S DREAM & JUNE HOLLAND
DESCRIPTION:Lithuanian ALGIS FEDIAJEVAS returns to The Peer Hat. His music embodies the philosophy of what it means to be a free spirit. By exploring human kindness through hitchhiking and busking\, he is inspired to write songs which question the reasons we are all here – but without that sense of arrogance or self-righteousness that suggests he has the answers. Inner thoughts and questions in his own native Lithuanian language\, pose no barrier\, with a music that is deep\, primal and intrinsic. Vital. \nCumbrian guitarist Peter and London pianist Myriam formed LEILA’S DREAM – a psychedelic prog folk / post rock fusion collective that arose in Manchester. \nSoundtracking their inspiration are the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emporer\, Spirogyra\, Sufjan Stevens and Nick Drake. Their wistful melodies and eery harmonies mean the group have spawned a beautiful sound that collects memories of the countryside fused with the city’s energy\, and they have latched onto a sound that transcends geography and embraces storytelling\, human nature\, and instinct. \nHailing from a small town just south of Manchester\, singer-songwriter JUNE HOLLAND grew up immersed in the sounds of Stevie Wonder and Etta James. Now crafting her own music\, she blends soulful vocals with an acoustic writing style reminiscent of Paolo Nutini. Come and experience her distinct\, bluesy undertones as warm as the month she’s named after.Hailing from a small town just south of Manchester\, singer-songwriter June Holland grew up immersed in the sounds of Stevie Wonder and Etta James. SUMMARY:RATS ON RAFTS (ROTTERDAM) & GUESTS
DESCRIPTION:Rotterdam’s Rats On Rafts are David Fagan\, Arnoud Verheul\, Natasha van Waardenburg and Mathijs Burgler. \nThe Rats’ proclivity for things eroded by the decay of time has remained a constant in their rigorous hands-on ethos. The Moon Is Big (2011)\, Tape Hiss (2015)\, and Excerpts Of Chapter 3: The Mind Runs A Net Of Rabbit Paths (2021) are truly gripping timestamps of a band refusing to give in to the supposed ‘progress of the world’ – first as hungry punk rock upstarts\, then as fiery analogue recording dogmatists and psych-rock protagonists. \nKnown for their explosive live performances\, they have toured across Europe and performed at festivals including Glastonbury\, Eurosonic and Le Guess Who. They have also shared the stage with Pere Ubu\, The Chills and The Nightingales. In 2019 they joined Franz Ferdinand on tour in Japan\, playing to huge arenas across the country. In 2022 they revisited Excerpts from Chapter 3 with Visions Of Chapter 3 which included material recorded at TivoliVrendenburg as part of an interdisciplinary music film. They also collaborated with Dutch underground punk / brass ensemble De Kift with a playful re-visioning of each other’s music. \nVideo: All These Things: https://youtu.be/vEYm59t3rZM \n

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT MANCHESTER FOLK HORROR VII
DESCRIPTION:By some quirk of fate or destiny\, we have arrived at the Seventh instalment of the Manchester Folk Horror Festival. Each year we try to approach that innocuous compound from a fresh angle. Indeed\, last year’s journey took us to the threshold of where we stand now\, upon the edge of a precipice. The number seven means magic and trouble. It is right then\, that we focus upon the age old myth of the Grail…let’s turn to the dictionary: \n1\nCapitalised: the cup or platter used according to medieval legend by Christ at the Last Supper and thereafter the object of knightly quests\n2\n: the object of an extended or difficult quest \nSo far so good. The notion that the Grail was used by Christ at the Last Supper is but one truth in a panoply of myths fading into the mists of time. Nevertheless it is a potent enough image to serve as the goal of perhaps the greatest of quests. \nWe live in dark times\, facing down existential destruction from a bewildering array of angles. What solution is there to be found\, short of accepting our fate and rejoicing into the dark\, until the last fire has burnt out? \nPerhaps none. But what if the horror came not from the last dance\, but from the possibility that there might be a greater call to a heavy responsibility? What if merely sitting back and watching as the world falls into night\, is not our destiny? What if we are called to set out into that night in search of…something; in search of something unknowable and unprovable? \nThis edition of the Manchester Folk Horror explores this idea. It is not a call to activism. It is a call to head forth into the utter unknown\, with nothing so much as one’s soul at stake. \nAs ever\, art allows us to examine this notion safely\, as if through a long distance telescope. In a quest filled with symbols\, music remains our most potent ally and most revealing lens. The date will be February 1st\, 2025. The location will be\, as ever\, The Peer Hat. We offer this event up to the Goddess Herself. (so that she might see that we are trying.) \nGNOD’s legend\, of a Salford collective emerging from the lives of desperate individuals; from a host of musical backgrounds; forming something like a singularity of sound; a sonic point of massive gravity; is one well know to locals. Indeed\, it is a legend that has seem them receive unanimous global and critical renown. They will be closing Folk Horror VII in what might be seen as the final sonic act of our micro epic. An irresistible banishment. \nThis year’s guest speaker\, is none other than JOHN MATTHEWS. Once described as ‘Oxford’s answer to all things mythic’\, John has been a professional independent scholar since 1980. He has made a lifetime study of the legends of King Arthur\, and more recently of the history of piracy. His list of publications totals over 100\, including Pirates (Athenaeum) which was a number one New York Times best seller for 22 weeks and was translated into 18 languages. He has acted as an advisor on several big budget movies\, including King Arthur\, Pirates of the Caribbean and Prince of Persia. His work on the education DVD to accompany King Arthur won a BAFTA award in 2003.\nHis best known and most widely read works are ‘Pirates’ (Carlton/ Athenaeum)\,  ‘The Grail\, Quest for Eternal Life’ (Thames & Hudson\, 1981) ‘The Winter Solstice’ (Quest Books\, 1999) which won the Benjamin Franklin Award for that year\, and ‘The Wildwood Tarot’ which has sold over half a million copies worldwide and is the second best-selling tarot of all time.. His book ‘Celtic Warrior Chiefs’ was a New York Public Library recommended title for young people\, and the more recent ‘Arthur of Albion’ won a Gold Medal from NAPPA\, a gold Moonbeams award and a BIB Golden Apple Award. \nHis love of Tarot and divination began when he devised the best-selling Arthurian Tarot\, with Caitlin Matthews in the 1980s. It has sold in the region of 150\,000 copies world-wide and had been though three editions. Since then he has worked on and devised a number of successful decks including\, The Wildwood Tarot (with Mark Ryan) The Shaman’s Oracle and The Camelot Oracle\, The Lost Tarot of Nostradamus\, The Steampunk Tarot: Gods of the Machine  (with Caitlin Matthews and Wil Kinghan)\, The Sherlock Holmes Tarot and The Oracle of Dr John Dee. His latest adventuress in Tarot include The Cather Tarot (with Wil Kinghan)\, The Byzantine Tarot with Cilla Conway\, and The Tarot of Light and Shadow with Andrea Aste.\nOxford\, UK. \nJohn’s most recent works include a study of the Temples of the Grail\, a new approach to tarot in The Fool’s New Journey\, and the stunningly illustrated Goblin Market Tarot. He is currently working on Realms of Arthur the second of a two-volume set of books retelling the little known myths of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table illustrated by John Howe\, key illustrator of the Lord of the Rings books and films. \nThe most experimental aspect of the day will be found in a special live rendition of GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT in all of its\, yes\, three hour immensity (there will be an intermission\, naturally). Expect an epic yet also simple\, mystical humble and hypnotic performance of an almost altogether similarly epic poem. One of only a few great epics of the English language. \nWritten in the High Medieval period\, in in a local North West Midlands dialect of Middle English\, in a largely. alliterative verse form more commonly accosted with the earlier Anglo Saxon period by an unknown poet and rendered into Modern English by local lad and poet laureate Simon Armitage. Mysterious in both origin and nature; it weaves together English\, Welsh and Irish mythology\, the French chivalric tradition\, both Christian and pagan tropes and fantastically realistic imagery from the natural world\, our very own\, local to us\, Peak District\, in particular\, all to truly spellbinding effect. \nPerformed by Salford Media City leader and local historian\, DAVID JACKSON\, alongside guitar maestro\, DBH. \nBEN MCELROY The first of our artists who were down to play last year\, but were ultimately foiled by unpredictable events. “In genre and form alike\, McElroy is ambiguous\, operating at the margins of several genres and thereby creating a sound that’s truly his own. In a world with no shortage of ambient records\, McElroy’s musical worldview encompasses ambient but isn’t constrained by it. Instead\, he is fluent in ambient\, drone and folk\, and he combines them masterfully. He is comfortable in the language of fingerpicked guitar and bowed strings\, but he can also create wobbly\, pulsating drones to go with them. ” \nWOODEN TAPES were denied playing last year due to cruel and unusual destiny. However\, 2025 sees this circumstance rectified. In May 2023\, musician and writer\, Tim Maycox’s Wooden Tape project delivered the album ‘Music From Another Place’ … a timeless collection of music that recalls pastoral lands\, summer months and folk rituals.\nHaving played in various bands\, supporting acts such as Teeth of the Sea and Mainliner and playing Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia\, Tim has recently turned his attention to writing a set of pieces based on his memories of children’s television themes coupled with flashes of acid folk and classic OST music of the 1970’s & 80’s. Sonically the album is awash with picked acoustic guitars\, percussive adornments\, warm synth pads and organ. The titles themselves\, suggest lost soundtracks or memories of forgotten TV themes. \nM-ORCHESTRA We welcome the Fortean electronica of London-based musician Martin Belam. Consciously navigating that rich seam of the uncanny; the almost documentary surrealism of the pre-Folk Horror genre 70s\, M-Orchestra is a welcome bout of what one might accurately label ‘hauntronic’\, using various media to form a cut-up snapshot of another\, perhaps truer reality. Damned facts indeed. \nSISTER MONICA is the patron saint of married women; difficult marriages; disappointing children; victims of adultery or unfaithfulness; victims of (verbal) abuse; and conversion of relatives. Also alcoholics. A movement beyond spectacle into a liminal sonic territory from artist\, Anne Louise Kershaw. \nFUTURES WE LOST invokes a dark post-industrial\, cinematic techno soundscape. Future visions collide with crumbling mills amidst the industrial scars of the northern English landscape. Sometimes a brutalist techno monolith to this mechanised slavery nightmare\, sometimes a dark ambient soundtrack to the distortion and living death of our dreams. A sonic memorial to all those futures we lost. \nCHELSEA HARE returns for this seventh festival. An artist of prodigious skill and talent\, his music explores genuinely unknown territories\, married to the clever melody and harmony. His mediations on this years theme\, promise to be revelatory. (The man is as modest as they come and would hate me saying that. Nevertheless.) \nELLA KAY is an electro acoustic composer and sound artist. Focusing on fixed media acousmatic works\, her work explore the intricacies of sound and humanity through a variety of auditory experiences. Moving\, uncanny and occasionally terrifying. This is art that exalts in the indulgent luxury of the sonic everyday. \nGARY FISHER is an artist and improviser who’s work primarily explores sound through objects\, actions\, ideas\, words and places. He has made performances\, installations and interventions in concert halls\, galleries\, public spaces\, living rooms and on live radio as well as producing many recorded and visual pieces. \nTHE MANIFESTATION GROUP have been compared to a host of artists\, Love; Broadcast and Syd Barrett amongst them. The duo of Haya Moon and Nick Alexander emphasise an approach that demands the removal of the artist\, as much as possible\, from the intent of the song\, recognising an agency in art and music that is extra-human. Each song is an ambassador from an different place\, with the pair acting as hosts for the guests. Since I am in The Manifestation Group\, I will attempt to follow my own advice and get out of the way. \n12pm-Midnight \n£17

SUMMARY:MORGAN GARRETT//ADRIAN STEELE//SHE THE THRONE
DESCRIPTION:MORGAN GARRETT has long been a stalwart presence in independent American experimental music. The 2024 release of Purity on Orange Milk Records\, his acclaimed fifth full length and first vinyl release\, underscores his commitment to his craft and to the wider world of challenging electronic music. Purity is a response to finding a neighbor’s dead body. While processing this trauma and his own relationship with suicidal ideation\, Morgan Garrett created an album of dissonance and fragile voice\, oscillating between dense electric guitars and anxiety ridden whispers. This mesh of avant-garde electronics\, rock instrumentation and hi-fidelity production is a new assertion in underground music.\nMorgan followed this release with the “Purity USA Tour”\, a 46 day self-booked headlining tour extending across the CONUS\, performing at venues such as Zebulon (LA)\, Johnny Brenda’s (PHL) and Trans Pecos (NYC). The live set begins in darkness: Morgan sitting down as he nervously lines his hands through his face and hair. ASMR-like sounds of creaky floorboards\, crackling fire\, and industrial noise play through his PA while footlights begin to flicker. After a break of silence\, Morgan explodes into song as he shreds through tracks from the LP with punishing live vocals\, effected acoustic guitar\, and blistering strobe lighting. The footlights and strobes cast giant shadows behind him as he flails and falls onto the ground\, presenting an image like a person on fire. In full visibility\, his gestures and expressions are exaggerated and extreme\, reminiscent of Butoh. All the while his soaring voice and electronic avant-garde backing band crash onto the audience like a shockwave of discontent. Morgan maintains an unwavering energy throughout the duration of his 30 minute psychodrama.\nhttps://www.extrememusic.net/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/morgangarrett/\n\nADRIAN STEELE composes cathartic walls of power-ambience\, which combines influences from ambient\, emo and industrial. Supersaws\, string arrangements\, and droning basslines collide with scrap metal distortion and screamed vocals. Themes explored include decaying beauty\, loss\, and the ruination of time.\nHe is also a member of various projects including Annexia\, Chermansog\, Fat Concubine and GOUT.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/adrian__steele__/\nhttps://soundcloud.com/annexiaradio\n\nSHE THE THRONE take transcendental ritual rhythmic noise\, replete with throbbing pulses and washes of ghostly static and mix it all in a murky sub bass soup. Taking as much influence from 70’s/80’s horror scores and industrial sounds\, as they do the backbone of experimental hip hop and harsh noise.\nhttps://shethethrone.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://slitheringblackrecords.bandcamp.com/…/daymares…\n\n£8https://youtu.be/97p3nHQHQLg?si=fq85sxkNZ32yh93K

SUMMARY:NIGHTSHIFT WITH VELVET TUXEDO & THE SERFS
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2019\, NIGHTSHIFT continue the city’s rich history of blurring the lines between DIY\, Post-Punk and Experimental Pop and features artist Eothen Stearn\, Chris White\, Andrew Doig aka Robert Sotelo and Georgia Harris.\nDescribed as ‘hypnotic punk’ they do not shy fromemploying repetition in their sound\, as well as embracing a variety of other musical stylings be they hyper rhythmic; noise based; pop inclined or emotive. There is no preconceived idea to the band’s identity.\nPrimarily dealing in humanist themes there is an optimistic\, utopian slant to Nightshift’s group persona. Never afraid to broach the absurdist strains of life that surrounds them\, they revel in everyday confusion and find respite in the small wonders of the natural universe and beyond.\n“Hypnotic… an intriguing blend of post-punk and psych-pop sounds” Stereogum\n\n\nTHE SERFS Experimental quartet based in Manchester UK SKYMOUTH SAYS “Suck it & see!”\n\nA four piece from Yorkshire\, VELVET TUXEDO are a guitar driven band and with an energy that only an exposed electrical socket could hit you with. That is if you would be so daring as to touch it…\nSurfing the ragged waves of US 60’s Garage and resurrecting the energy from the British Freakbeat scene circa 65/66\, Velvet Tuxedo offer sounds that risk turning you away from the standard pop charts to delve deep into a record store’s “rare finds” box in search of something best played in cloud of purple haze.

SUMMARY:MEGANOKE//HORSEMEAT//MARIE FRANC
DESCRIPTION:SKYMOUTH SAYS: “Have you heard the one about the trip hopper\, the stoner and the dreamer? I haven’t written the punchline yet but I know it is going to tear down the house!”\nAmerican singer\, songwriter and producer MEGANOKE’s distinctive sound intertwines heavy beats with siren song vocals—nodding to a nostalgic past—while guiding you into an open future.\nThe live music capitol of the world\, Austin\, Texas (SKYMOUTH SAYS ” Sorry Meganoke\, this is only true in dimension 478b”) was the ideal foundation for Meganoke to hone her organic\, sultry sound.\nIn her early year as an artist\, she bought a Dodge Sprinter van\, turned it into a living space and began to tour continuously\, bringing to reality the phrase “Tour Life.”\nMeganoke ranged the US from west to east\, north to Canada\, and across the seas to Reykjavik\, London\, Manchester\, Oslo\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Paris\, Seoul\, and Tokyo. Many miles and concert tours have been envisioned\, organized and executed solo. But wherever Meganoke goes\, she seeks to build creatively with artists of all kinds that cross her path.\n\n\nConceived under the apocalyptic glow of 2018’s dying winter sunlight\, HORSEMEAT is the product of three men’s love of 80’s metal and 90s grunge in a safe and supportive environment. Whilst you could say Horsemeat is music for carnivores\, it can be equally enjoyed by listeners of all dietary persuasions.\nSKYMOUTH SAYS “THEY ARE RELEASING A NEW ALBUM SO IT WOULD BE FUNNY TO HELP THEM.”\n\n\nMARIE FRANC\, a six-piece band from Manchester\, offer a unique blend of sultry pop vocals and intricate instrumentation. Their sound draws from a diverse range of influences including folk\, jazz\, rock\, and country\, resulting in a captivating musical experience. Their lyrics touch upon themes of love\, history\, nature\, folklore\, and sexuality.\nSKYMOUTH SAYS: “As you can see\, I am a GENIUS curator”\n£7

SUMMARY:KARA DELIK//TRANSCENDENTAL EQUATION//GIGANTIC DEATH RAYS
DESCRIPTION:SKYMOUTH SAYS: “We’ve put the squeeze on you. I HAVE NO BODY!!” \nBerlin’s Anatolian\, post-punk\, new-wave group explodes with dynamic\, poly-rhythmic psych-grooves\, live energy\, and a galactic panache for otherworldly effects. The Anatolian post-punk\, Kraut-Welle\, psych-dub\, sounds of KARA DELIK is rooted in the history of Anatolian rock\, Neue Deutsche Welle\, and dub\, all delivered with a zesty\, post-punk\, explosive live punch. The international trio of Barış Öner [Istanbul Ghetto Club] on saz\, Andi Sommer [Henry Fonda\, Yacht Communismon] on bass and synths\, and drummer Eilis Frawley [Anika\, Laura Lee & The Jettes] interweave energetic\, complex rhythms\, soundscapes\, and effects\, creating an industrious post-punk melee of Anatolian heat. Founded in 2020\, Kara Delik first exploded onto the Berlin scene with their debut EP Tamam\, before taking their sounds across the continent\, later rewarding fans with a trilogy of EPs\, entitled Singularities. Having played across the continent and multiple festivals\, with an album in the pipeline\, no-one is safe from being pulled in the music vortex of Kara Delik. \nTRANCENDENTAL EQUATION are an instrumental three piece (lead by ILL vocalist and bass player\, Whitney Bluzma) weaving sonic psychedelia in the vein of the Animated Egg\, with powerful tarot driven improvisational moments. A band guaranteed to constantly surprise and entice. Firm favourites here at The Peer Hat. \nGIGANTIC DEATH RAYS self described ‘avant-garde disco schlock rock’\, the Rays play The Peer Hat for the first time. If their recordings are anything to go by\, they should rule hard. SKYMOUTH SAYS: “I have nothing clever to say yet. Time! TIME!” \n  \n£8

SUMMARY:TUPPENNY BUNTERS AUTUMN TOUR 2024
DESCRIPTION: Dave and Fi Dulake became TUPPENNY BUNTERS in 2012\, the same year they got married. Fi had been the Hammond player in Dave’s previous band\, The Virgo Intacta\, who were on The White Stripes “Satan” tour as 1st support. Parallel to running a notorious Southend music pub\, The Railway Hotel\, the duo\, after naming themselves after Regency prostitutes\, set about capturing the sound they perceived\, a piano dripping garage/pop wall of melodies and chord shifts. Their first album was recorded live to a Studer in the cellar of the pub. They released it on their own label\, Dansettual.  Called “A Tuppenny Upright”\, the results\, while sketchy\, present them well. At times\, the piano (a Bluthner upright) threatens to cuddle you to death\, at others it appears to be absently flipping you off\, and the drums are tuned high\, dirty and loonar. If they were cleverer\, or could be bothered\, they’d be prog. Cooler\, or if they both dressed like Fi\, they’d be psyche\, and if they didn’t constantly feel the need to burst into song\, for their sheer sonic nerve they’d be garage. The Bunters songwriting is all the way down the cracks between Pete Ham\, Syd Barrett and Lionel Bart\, but their live performance sits precariously on a web spun by X Ray Spex\, The White Stripes\, Wings and\, well\, Sparks\, I guess – in that\, you’re never quite sure who to watch. She smashes shit out of the kit with her hair going everywhere\, while he\, 20 years older and desperate to keep up\, pounds the Fender Rhodes and screams his fucking head off\, trying always for a snarling Steve Marriott but coming off more like an enraged Dean Friedman. Then they swap\, and now you’re totally on the back foot\, cos now he’s laying into the kit\, and she’s up…her intense brown eyes staring you down; melodies from an age way before her time and a piercing\, shrieking voice that only ever seems at home above top C.   Fingernails scraping down a Marmite smeared blackboard. You won’t go to the bar though\, cos then there are the songs\, which\, possibly against your better judgement\, will tick one of your boxes. They’ll take you on an uncomfortable switchback ride through pop music’s wheat and chaff\, and just when you think you’ve dissed it or nailed it\, when you think “I can hear a bit of 10CC and The Damned in there…” then Billy Childish pops in with Julie Andrews and you still won’t know whether they’re tossers or visionarys. A review for Dave’s “Butterfingers” album in The Face back in 2003 called it “annoying and refreshing in equal parts”. In 2021\, no lessons have been learnt\, and the Bunters continue to baffle\, irritate and spellbind wherever they go. \n TUPPENNY BUNTERS 2nd album “The Tuppenny Hangover” was recorded at Gizzard Studios\, and came out in March 2022 on the Dansettual label. \nThe Bunters’ comedy play – FIFTEEN MINUTE BREAK appeared at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe festival. Also performed in Margate\, London and Southend. The run has now ended however The Bunters are now working on their new play. More info on that to be announced shortly. \nIn the mena time\, they will be touring the UK this March\, Sept & Oct 2024 and Europe April/May 2024

SUMMARY:JIMMY WHISPERS
DESCRIPTION:A lot has changed for everyone in the past few years\, and especially for Jimmy Whispers. In another lifetime\, he was that sweet kid from Chicago who stole our hearts with his aw-shucks Midwestern attitude and his knack for writing catchy old-time melodies\, who legendary critic Jessica Hopper once called the city’s “greatest new homegrown musical enigma”. As for today\, Jimmy Whispers is alive and well in Los Angeles. He’s still making music—quite a lot of it. He’s got a blossoming new career as a music video director and filmmaker. He’s become a co-writer for others including Drugdealer and Dent May. He’s got a side hustle as a valet parking attendant\, a 1988 Buick Reatta\, and a new commitment to making life-affirming art.\n\n\n@jimmywhispersxo\n@primacaviar
