SUMMARY:Manchester Folk Horror Festival VI
DESCRIPTION:The Sixth Annual Manchester Folk Horror Festival\, continues our steady\, controlled (?) descent into the labyrinth. In a time when radical or so called ‘insane’ ideas must be considered and re/discovered (with the stakes being nothing less than the survival of life upon Earth)\, the Manchester Folk Horror Festival cannot be a celebration of images and meanings fetishised by academics and pop culture addicts. It must be a process\, or praxis. We are severed from the earth and from a deeper truth that extends beyond the merely mechanical. And coming back into that relationship\, is a terrifying experience. \nContained in this occurrence of the Festival\, is a reaching for something like magic in action. Terrifying? Yes. Fun? Also yes. And hopefully\, dare we say\, a very Mancunian occurrence. \nAs usual\, we’ve stirred up a series of adjectives and nouns to form something approaching a theme. This year\, it’s ‘True Hallucinations & The Myth Of History’\, almost referencing Terence McKenna and almost referencing Hauntology. (Whaddya think we are\, professionals?) We put forward the idea that multiple realities sit upon one and with one another\, all true simultaneously\, requiring only a shift in perspective to enter places at once\, utterly new and utterly familiar. Not a multiverse conceived to even out the books\, but a wider\, more impossible world\, wherein miracles are a matter of relation. What indeed\, is the city to the bee? \nHistory and the unreachable now\, remain ghostly images\, memories or stories which conjure images. An increasingly devastated British landscape of bound hills; smog horizoned cityscapes; landfills; quarries encroaching upon the sacred; skeletal pylons and incongruous wind turbines\, leads us to a kind of spiritual desolation. And yet\, in spite of this ravaging\, an opportunity is presented\, for as this process continues unabated\, we de-couple from the image of things as we have come to know them. The careful illusion of time and place is shattered and new histories and new liminal realities begin to emerge. Our relationship changes and we become like new born exotic moths\, native to a fractal apocalypse. Can we come to terms with our responsibility and our capability to imagine and indeed\, be imagined? \nFEATURING \nANGELINE MORRISON- Angeline Morrison is a singer\, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who explores traditional song with a deep love\, respect and curiosity. Angeline mostly makes music\nin the genres of wyrd folk and psych folk\, her work infused with elements of soul music\, literature\, ‘60s beat pop sounds\, folklore\, myth and the supernatural. \nWith a feral approach\, a handmade sonic aesthetic and a belief in the importance of tenderness\, Angeline’s original compositions and re-stitchings of traditional songs focus on storytelling and the small things that often go unnoticed. Sounds like solitude\, memory\, nostalgia\, a rainy walk amongst trees… \nIn July 2022\, Angeline was announced as the fourth winner of the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize at Cambridge Folk Festival\, which generously supports the development of emerging talent in the folk genre. In December 2022 The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience was voted No 1 Folk album of the year in The Guardian. \nYou can also hear Angeline as part of alt-folk duo We Are Muffy with Nick Duffy (of The Lilac Time)\, and psych-folk duo Rowan : Morrison with The Rowan Amber Mill. \nThe Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (released October 2022\, Topic Records) is a work of re-storying. The historic Black presence in the UK dates back to at least Roman times\, yet is often hidden\, forgotten or unacknowledged. The populations of enslaved African people and their descendants in the USA have their bodies of folk song\, which are vitally important for containing histories\, expressing feelings\, giving voice and claiming presence… but the Black ancestors of the UK have no equivalent body of song. The Sorrow Songs begins to address this. It is a gift to the forgotten Black ancestors of these islands\, and to the folk community here today. The album uses history and imagination to tell stories of UK Black ancestors in the sonic style of UK traditional and folk music. \nSHE THE THRONE- She The Throne is a profound mediation between noise and music\, soundscape and soundtrack\, and abrasion and sublimity\, imbuing meaning in each\, absent from either alone. Immersive\, compelling\, disjointed and in harmony\, they present one of Manchester’s finest portals into the other – a place of dreadful immanence and beauty. \n  \n  \nBURD ELLEN is a project featuring Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts\, Green Ribbons) and Gayle Brogan (Pefkin\, Electroscope). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Innovative instrumentation\, drone and sound-wash support detailed vocal work to create a unique sonic atmosphere. \nA Tarot Of The Green Wood is their third studio album\, released Oct 2022. Debbie Armour says “I’m a long time collector and lover of tarot\, and I’ve recently become drawn to the idea of finding parallels between interpretation of traditional song and the art of divination. Gayle and I have brought together a new collection of songs that reflect the ideas\, archetypes and imagery of the Major Arcana.” Developed on residency at Sage Gateshead\, the album also features guest appearances from Irish piper Ian Lynch (Fire Draw Near\, Lankum) and Newcastle-based composer Mark Wardlaw (Kenosist\, The Old Police House) \nA Tarot Of The Green Wood entered the Official UK Folk Album charts at number 17. It was number 5 in The Guardian’s Best Folk Albums 2022\, and also made Best of Year lists from Folk Radio UK\, Concrete Islands\, Record Crates United and more. Songlines magazine gave it a coveted Top Of The World spot and the singles received regular plays on BBC6 Music\, BBC Radio3 and BBC Radio Scotland. \nBurd Ellen have appeared at Cambridge Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections\, Fanø Free Folk Festival\, Cafe Oto\, The Glad Cafe and many other stages in the UK and Europe. They are carving out a sonically adventurous niche\, but one that is informed by a deep love and respect for traditional song.\n​\n“The most innovative duo in folk” – Folk Radio UK. (Best Albums of 2020 & 2022)\n“Magnificent” – 8/10\, Uncut Magazine\n“One of the finest folk explorers” – The Wire Magazine\n“Wonderful!” – Cerys Matthews\, BBC Radio 6 Music\n“Dripping with strangeness and unease” – The Guardian (Top 10 Folk Albums 2020 & 2022) \n  \nWOODEN TAPES-In May 2023\, musician and writer\, Tim Maycox’s Wooden Tape project delivered the album ‘Music From Another Place’ … a timeless collection of music that recalls pastoral lands\, summer months and folk rituals.\nHaving played in various bands\, supporting acts such as Teeth of the Sea and Mainliner and playing Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia\, Tim has recently turned his attention to writing a set of pieces based on his memories of children’s television themes coupled with flashes of acid folk and classic OST music of the 1970’s & 80’s. Sonically the album is awash with picked acoustic guitars\, percussive adornments\, warm synth pads and organ. The titles themselves\, suggest lost soundtracks or memories of forgotten TV themes. \nFUTURES WE LOST is the dark post-industrial\, cinematic techno soundscape of electronic artist and producer Doug Gordon. Rising from the ashes of 2020’s grief and inspired by the artist’s ancestral roots under the crumbling mills and industrial scars of the northern English landscape; the self-titled upcoming debut album explores these post-industrial graveyards and dystopian future visions through the lens of our present day neo technological horrors. Sometimes a brutalist techno monolith to this mechanised slavery nightmare\, sometimes a dark ambient soundtrack to the distortion and living death of our dreams. A sonic memorial to all those futures we lost… \nTHE MANIFESTATION GROUP- Described as unique\, timeless and devastating\, The Manifestation Group explore the world of songs as living entities and the audience as lightning rod for the miraculaous. He possesses a deep love of what’s known as folk religion\, spirituality and magic from all around the world and it is in the long term study of that \, which informs his inspirational work. \nMAYA BRAKNELL-WATSON is an interdisciplinary artist\, poet and researcher. \nHer work over the past 8 years has been informed by her shamanic studies\, work with the Wixarika (Huichol) and Mazatec tribes in Mexico\, and her work as a psychedelic parapsychology researcher in the study of N\,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT)\, entity encounters\, and ‘other worlds’ with Dr David Luke at Greenwich University. \nShe has performed and exhibited at Breaking Convention and the Tate Britain\, and is the host of Psychedelicacies\, an online lecture series. She is currently working with Second Sight Healing\, a neoshamanic organisation dedicated to the rediscovery of the animistic traditions of our land here in the UK\, and is a lecturer on the Semantrix Sessions\, a course on the intersection between Language and Psychedelics. \nWalking between the worlds of the arts\, science and the occult\, she combines media and investigative techniques from each to inform and articulate one another in the investigation of ontology\, consciousness and altered states\, interconnectivity\, the human condition and its relation to the environment\, otherness and mortality. \nShe describes her practise and research as contemporary Memento Mori (‘remember you will die’)\, and explores what that means in a\ntime of mass ecocide\, destruction and extinction. \nADRIAN REYNOLDS is a writer\, film maker\, tarot deck designer\, artist and life coach\, whose current Untraditional Stories project\, is finding increasing traction in an increasingly fracture world. DESCRIPTION:It’s been a long and eventful road for Godsticks since emerging onto the scene with their eponymously titled EP in 2009 showcasing the band’s then progressive-rock leanings. Since then\, subsequent albums became progressively heavier and received further critical acclaim\, culminating in the ‘genre redefining’ prog metal masterpiece that was ‘Emergence’\, which ultimately led to them being signed to Kscope. Having extensively toured Europe since 2012\, in the last few years the band have finally gained recognition as the explosive\, high energy live act they’d always threatened to become. Drummer Tom Price and guitarist Gavin Bushell bring an accomplished and aggressive playing style to back up Darran Charles’ unique vocal sound and Dan Nelson’s driving bass. Godsticks released their sixth studio album in May 2023 on Kscope\, titled “This Is What A Winner Looks Like”. \nTheir fifth studio album ‘Inescapable’ – was released via Kscope in February 2020\, featuring in the top 20 of many end-of-year music journalist lists. The band embarked on a UK tour in 2021 followed by countless blistering festival appearances in 2022 including Tech Fest and Prog Power.

SUMMARY:ALGIS FEDIAJEVAS with GC HOLMES & TALLULAH GUARD
DESCRIPTION:Lithuanian ALGIS FEDIAJEVAS embodies the philosophy of what it means to be a free spirit. By exploring human kindness through hitchhiking and busking\, he is inspired to write songs which question the reason while we are all here but without any sense of arrogance or self-righteousness to believe that he has the answers to these questions. Inner thoughts and questions in his own native Lithuanian language\, pose no barrier\, with a music that is deep\, primal and intrinsic. Vital.\n\nGC HOLMES began performing at open mics in Manchester in 2009 with a totally raw combination of primitive acoustic guitar and screamed poetry. He then formed his first band ‘The Genitals’ who played a handful of gigs in 2011. The Genitals disbanded and Holmes continued solo\, releasing an EP of 5 original songs entitled ‘Scarshark’ in 2014. After Scarshark Holmes started work on his debut full length album ‘Ultralove’\, it was recorded mostly live with his band at the influential EVE Studios\, and was finally released in 2019. Ultralove was endorsed by Manchester institution Piccadilly Records who agreed to stock the album in CD format and reviewed the album favourably\, with the words: “Woozy\, reverbed majesty”\, “Shimmering\, wide-ranging cinematic impact”\, & finally\, simply: “Lovely stuff all round”. Ultralove was variously compared to Bowie\, Richard Hawley\, Lift To Experience & The War on Drugs. After the release of Ultralove Holmes went back into the studio in early 2020 to start work on his second album entitled ‘Hearing’\, the work on which is still ongoing but with a tentative release date of late 2023/ early 2024. The sound of Hearing is the natural departure of an artist seeking new methods to produce work\, a deeper and more meditative sound\, a spiritual reflection of Holmes’ burgeoning interest in yoga & meditation. DESCRIPTION:Once more we welcome back the peerless TUPPENNY BUNTERS…\n\nDave and Fi Dulake became TUPPENNY BUNTERS in 2012\, the same year they got married. Fi had been the Hammond player in Dave’s previous band\, The Virgo Intacta\, who were on The White Stripes “Satan” tour as 1st support. Parallel to running a notorious Southend music pub\, The Railway Hotel\, the duo\, after naming themselves after Regency prostitutes\, set about capturing the sound they perceived\, a piano dripping garage/pop wall of melodies and chord shifts. Their first album was recorded live to a Studer in the cellar of the pub. They released it on their own label\, Dansettual. Called “A Tuppenny Upright”\, the results\, while sketchy\, present them well. At times\, the piano (a Bluthner upright) threatens to cuddle you to death\, at others it appears to be absently flipping you off\, and the drums are tuned high\, dirty and loonar. If they were cleverer\, or could be bothered\, they’d be prog. Cooler\, or if they both dressed like Fi\, they’d be psyche\, and if they didn’t constantly feel the need to burst into song\, for their sheer sonic nerve they’d be garage.\n\nThe Bunters songwriting is all the way down the cracks between Pete Ham\, Syd Barrett and Lionel Bart\, but their live performance sits precariously on a web spun by X Ray Spex\, The White Stripes\, Wings and\, well\, Sparks\, I guess – in that\, you’re never quite sure who to watch. She smashes shit out of the kit with her hair going everywhere\, while he\, 20 years older and desperate to keep up\, pounds the Fender Rhodes and screams his fucking head off\, trying always for a snarling Steve Marriott but coming off more like an enraged Dean Friedman. Then they swap\, and now you’re totally on the back foot\, cos now he’s laying into the kit\, and she’s up…her intense brown eyes staring you down; melodies from an age way before her time and a piercing\, shrieking voice that only ever seems at home above top C. Fingernails scraping down a Marmite smeared blackboard. You won’t go to the bar though\, cos then there are the songs\, which\, possibly against your better judgement\, will tick one of your boxes. They’ll take you on an uncomfortable switchback ride through pop music’s wheat and chaff\, and just when you think you’ve dissed it or nailed it\, when you think “I can hear a bit of 10CC and The Damned in there…” then Billy Childish pops in with Julie Andrews and you still won’t know whether they’re tossers or visionarys. A review for Dave’s “Butterfingers” album in The Face back in 2003 called it “annoying and refreshing in equal parts”\nSKYMOUTH SAYS “We cannot do less than love!”\n\n\nJUICE POPS Perennial Peer Hat Prodigies\, JUICE POPS are back…\nManchester’s own dream surf\, poison sugar trine. DESCRIPTION:What a pleasure it is\, to welcome BEAUTIFY JUNKYARDS to The Peer Hat. Here’s a little about their last album\, which ought to illuminate this splendid band for you:\n“The fourth album for the Lisbon based band and their second on Ghost Box following on from The Invisible World of Beautify Junkyards in 2018. Cosmorama is a beautifully crafted and lavishly produced adventure into tropicalia tinged psychedelic dream pop. A hallucinogenic fusion of Os Mutantes and Broadcast. The eleven songs here are instantly rewarding and transportive\, but the rich production rewards the listener with new detail on every repeated play. Its music that’s knowingly informed by Portuguese and Brazilian vocal traditions\, with gauzy layers of male and female voices moving beguilingly amongst each other\, shifting\, dreamlike\, between languages. This is set against an electroacoustic backdrop of complex percussion\, masterly acoustic musicianship and a matrix of haunted electronics that makes this album perfectly at home in the world of Ghost Box records.\nThe Band: Beautify Junkyards are a very talented group of multi-instrumentalists headed up by João Branco Kyron on vocals and keyboards\, Helena Espvall (formerly of Espers) on cello\, flute and electric guitar\, João Moreira on acoustic guitar and keyboards\, Sergue Ra on bass and Antonio Watts on drums and percussion. A mixed-Secwépemc artist living in Treaty 7 Territory\, she’s devoted her entire career to inventing and playing instrumentally brilliant melodies that unleash her passions and her full-throated vocal tones.\nAs a result\, Miesha & The Spanks have become a tighter and more muscular version of themselves with each new release. DESCRIPTION:In BEN MCELROY’S own words:\n“I am a composer/musician based in Nottingham\, UK but originally from the seaside town of West Kirby on The Wirral. I have been writing and recording music in various forms since my teens – teaching myself the basics of guitar and cassette based recording.\nSadly my shoe box of cassettes from this time dissappeared- I’m sure they’d contain all the cliches of teenage songwriting\, alongside some pretty ‘naive’ guitar playing\, but it would be nice to have a document of these early days! I think part of my drive to make music nowadays is a kind of yearning to recreate these lost gems- even including the odd wonky mix and interesting timings. \nHaving explored many musical styles I gravitated towards the earthy tones of folk music and learnt how to make sounds out of fiddles\, whistles and accordions. This\, coupled with doing a music tech course at Clarendon College in Nottingham\, led to my current musical mish mash of folky sounds fed and processed through my trusty old mac (the cassette recorder chewed up its last tape sometime in the early noughties).\nI have released a number of albums/eps to date\, some on small labels\, some self released. My latest album ‘How I learnt to Disengage From The Pack’ was released in January 22 on The Slow Music movement and received a 4 star review (as well as folk album of the month) in The Guardian. DESCRIPTION:Occult Fracture is a dark edged hard rock band. Their music features scathing guitar\, machine-like drums\, propulsive bass and soulful vocals that weave through the riffs\, creating a unique sound and vibe. Their live performances are energetic\, powerful and recall something of Jex Thoth.\n​\nBased out of Charlotte\, NC\, the band formed in 2020 and soon began playing out in local venues. They released their debut EP\, Fatal Unkind\, a few days before Halloween 2021. They released their follow-up EP\, Bones & Bonfires\, in May 2022. The band’s latest EP\, The War Inside\, dropped in November 2022.\n\n\n“This gloriously dark band from Charlotte features an intense vocalist\, Crystal Crosby\, whose energy seeps through stereo speakers like a home invasion. All four of the tracks exhibit a semi old school vibe\, sort of reminding me of the better art punk groups of the 1980s. This is their third EP in two years as a band.
